By Clint Parker On the coldest night of the reg-
ular season, Erwin went head to head with Asheville and came up with the short end of the stick af- ter losing its starting quarterback to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, aiding the Cougars in their 48-27 victory that clinched their sixth straight Mountain Ath- letic Conference title. Shaquan Curenton intercepted
an Asheville pass and ran 60 yards for a touchdown to bring the score to 28-27 in the third quarter. However, during the play, offi- cials f lagged quarterback Garrett Brown with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and tossed him from the game. The touchdown was allowed to stand, but his loss took the wind out of Erwin’s sails. Backup quarterback Austin
Brown, Garrett’s younger brother, had a fumble and an interception in relief, and the Cougars capital- ized on miscues to score 20 unan- swered second-half points. In a game that was dominated
by penalties, it was the Warriors who started with a hot hand as Tanner Brookshire picked off an Asheville pass on the Cougars’ opening drive. Two plays later, the Warriors’ Trey Clark ran it into the end zone to make the score 7-0. Asheville’s Tysean Holloway,
who rushed for a game-high 250 yards, tied the game on a touch- down run later in the first quarter, but lost Florida commit Jeoffrey Pagan on the drive for the season with two ligament tears. Asheville continued to find suc-

to pull Erwin to within a touch- down. After an Asheville touchdown
put the Cougars ahead 28-14, Curenton provided a huge mo- mentum boost when he took a
kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. On the next drive, he followed up his big play with another, taking an interception for a touchdown, his fourth interception returned for a touchdown this season.
However, officials f lagged
Brown for throwing a block too far away from the ball, resulting in his ejection and quelling the Er- win attack. Erwin had 238 yards of total
offense, but Asheville gashed the Warriors defense for 430 yards on the ground. Erwin will play Kings Mountain
in the first round of the playoffs Friday (Nov. 12).
