Where we worship
By Loren Metts As we prepare to celebrate the
upcoming Tanksgiving holi- day, members of Barnardsville Church of God are busy planning a few special celebrations of their own. In just a few months, the church will be commemorating its 80th birthday.
It was in 1931
that BCOG first opened its doors to ministry under the leadership of Pastor Dixie Chambers. Te church originally met less than a mile away from its current loca- tion on Barnardsville Highway. Records show this existing prop- erty was generously donated to the church for $10 by a group of local Baptist and Methodist believers. BCOG members will also soon
be celebrating the 90th birthday of Ms. Alice Flup, who is the church’s only living charter member. At age 10, she was the youngest of the church’s 20 original members. Pastor Daniel Reid describes Ms. Alice as ‘an amazing woman that is still a vital part of our church and community today.” Reid and his wife, Sue, have
Barnardsville Church of God
been at BCOG since July 2009. Reid grew up in south Asheville and is a graduate of T.C. Roberson High School. He has been serv- ing in Christian ministry since the early 1980s. Before moving to Barnardsville, he ministered for 20 years in Haywood County as a bi-vocational youth minister and evangelist, as well as in several in- terim pastoral positions. “I love the Barnardsville community. It is full of wonderful people who have been very accepting of us.” BCOG worships each week
in the same sanctuary that was constructed in 1942. Te church has made many efforts over the past year to update and improve their facilities in order to better meet the needs of their growing church.
“We have been working
hard to improve our space, espe- cially for our youth and children’s ministries,” Reid said. BCOG helps provide for local commu- nity needs through their financial support of the Big Ivy Food Pan- try. Te church is also very sup- portive of Church of God world missions. “Today many in our country
are going through difficult times,” Reid said.
“More than ever, peo-
ple are searching for truth and cer- tainty. In John 14:6, Jesus says ‘I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.’ With so much un- certainty around us, we can have full confidence in our faith in Je- sus. He is the only way to God and is our only source of lasting
peace and joy. None of our needs are too great for Him.” BCOG offers our North Bun-
combe community a Pentecostal style of worship on Sundays and Wednesdays. For more informa- tion about the ministry of BCOG, call 626-2460.
