16 THE TRIBUNE/LEADER - November 11 - November 17, 2010
By Ken Higgins As I’ve gotten older (and fat-
ter!), my style of deer hunting has changed. I no longer spend hours slowly stalking ridge lines trying to find deer below me in oak groves. Using a climbing tree stand is no longer fun either. Aching hip and shoulder joints havw stopped me from using a climber. I’ve started hunting out of elevated, enclosed plywood deer stands. Tese are sometime referred to as shooting towers. I now enjoy sitting in a nice com-
fortable office chair while I wait for deer to pass through a shooting lane or enter a distant food plot. No danger of falling if I nod off. Lots of shelves for coffee, snacks, sand bags, and even an old wool blanket if it’s chilly. Tese stands are great for taking
younger hunters on their first big game hunt. A certain amount of noise can be made without spook- ing deer. Old carpet on the floor and tacked to the inside walls helps soundproof any noise made by young hunters. You’ll be able to carry on low conversations while giving instructions to young hunt- ers. Tell them to listen for deer rustling leaves and breaking twigs. You’ll be surprised at what they’ll hear and spot. Just for fun, I built a two-story stand with a flush toilet. I even made
a shooting window by the toilet so a fellow could still hunt while doing business. My wife on her one and only tour pointed out that someone downstairs could have an acciden- tal discharge of their rifle and hit one of us in the top of the stand. She wondered how she was going to explain at my funeral how I’d been shot by a friend who was hunting deer sitting on a toilet. I nailed the window shut and took out the gun rack. While shopping at Lowe’s last
week for tree stand lumber, I saw a new product that I decided to try. It is plywood with a plastic film of
Real Tree Camo. A 4x8 sheet sells for $15. By my calculation, I would pay about $9 to make my own sheet of similar size, so I paid $6 more, because the cool-looking custom camo was too good to pass up. In the photo we have just finished
building a new stand using the new camo plywood. It’s not finished in the photo. More small trees and bushes will be tied onto the legs so it blends into the background. Te shooting rails have yet to be paint- ed. I’m interested to see if this plas- tic film that appears to be glued on holds up under sun and rain. Check it out if you’re over at Lowe’s.
