Seniors set new high for soccer team
By Matt Tate North Buncombe senior Jona-
than Gonzalez said he knew it in middle school.: Tis season could be a special year for the boys’ soc- cer team. Turns out, his gut instinct was
right. Te core group of eight seniors–
Gonzalez, Parker White, Alex Tensi, Cody Cantwell, Bayron Mendez, Austin Braxton, Darien Bodenhorst and Grant Westbrook–delivered one of the program’s best seasons in recent memory with a Mountain Athletic Conference title, victories against traditional powers Asheville and Reynolds and an appearance in the second round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A playoffs. “It feels good for North Bun-
combe to be put up there with the great soccer teams in the area,” Gonzalez said.
Coach Chris Zimmerman hopes
the success of this year’s team will pay off dividends in the future. “Tis team has set the standard of
where we want to be,” he said. “Te kids now know how much it is going to take to get where we are at and I think they want to stay there.” Although the BlackHawks will
lose the eight starters next season, Zimmerman said this kind of sea- son can have a snowball effect that increases both effort and participa- tion from future classes. Te dream season was not with-
out its bumps in the road, includ- ing a sluggish start out of the gate. Chemistry was lacking, Zimmer- man said, as the BlackHawks came up on the losing end of several close games in August and September. “Te kids stayed positive, though,
and worked hard,” he said. When the BlackHawks entered
the MAC portion of the schedule, White said the team got a few wins
under its belt and began to gain confidence. “Once we got the momentum
going, we just started rolling,” he added. Included in that roll were victo-
ries against the Rockets and Cou- gars, something the BlackHawks have not done in Zimmerman’s nine years at the helm. Te victory against Reynolds
clinched the MAC crown for the BlackHawks for the first time in roughly two decades. Te BlackHawks (9-9-3) also
picked up a home playoff victory be- fore dropping a heartbreaking loss to Foard 1-0 on Saturday (Nov. 6). White said he was not ready for
the ride to end, but Zimmerman said looking back on this season and the obstacles they were able to overcome, no one should be hang- ing their heads. “It just shows how resilient these kids are,” he said.
