BlackHawks hang tough in Roberson loss

By Matt Tate While there have been flickers of

a strong running game for North Buncombe this season, such as the 245 yards the team’s stable of running backs churned out in the Oct. 1 win against McDowell, it has been the team’s passing game that continues to evolve. Quarterback Christian Jewkes

passed for 201 yards Friday (Oct. 8) in a 37-13 loss to Roberson. He passed for two touchdowns to his two favorite targets, Colby

Fox and Ben Shelton. Shelton end- ed up with eight receptions for 134 yards. Jewkes, who tallied more than

1,000 yards through the air as the quarterback of the junior varsity team last season, has passed for nine touchdowns this year, in- cluding five in Mountain Athletic Conference play. “He’s a smart quarterback,”

Metts said. “We’ve been running the right plays to get kids open. Te receivers are running great routes. And he’s picking the right guys at the right time.”

Girls’ tennis players qualify for regionals

For the first time in school history, every member of the North Buncombe

High School girls’ tennis team qualified for regionals. Te members are Lau- ren Propst, Ilex McLeod, Emily Litton, Alison Fox, Allison Quinn and Julia Lindholm.

Te BlackHawks (2-6 overall,

1-2 Mountain Athletic Confer- ence) struggled running the ball against the more physical Rams. Two early fumbles that Roberson was able to convert into 14 quick points early in the game forced the BlackHawks to turn to the air more to play catch up. Still, Metts felt the effort was

there for North Buncombe. “I never thought the game was

lost,” he said. “I felt we were in it the entire time because of the way we could move the ball.” Te BlackHawks had several

more drives in the game into Rob- erson’s territory that they were un- able to convert into points. North Buncombe now takes an

off week to prepare for a brutal stretch against three probable play- off teams in Erwin, Reynolds and Asheville to conclude its season. First up is Erwin, who is led

by the strong arm of quarterback Garrett Brown and speedy receiv- ers Shaquan Curenton and Trey Clark. Metts said he will use the bye

week to work on slowing down the Warriors attack and finding holes in Erwin’s fast and opportunistic defense. “If we can do some things to

hang onto the football and run the clock, we can hang in the game,” Metts said. Te BlackHawks will host Er- win on Oct. 22.
