Leicester Community center honors two locals
By Catherine Hunter Leicester Community Center
secretary Greg Brookshire said it was difficult singling out only two people, but the community center named Michelle West as the Leices- ter Woman of the Year and George Mears as the Man of the Year. Te community center board
awarded both West and Mears a plaque at the board meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 12). Brookshire said West was recognized primarily for
her help with the Sandy Mush 4-H and Mears was recognized for his efforts in preserving the history of Leicester. West was unable to attend the cer-
emony because she was taking a col- lege test for her elementary education degree. Her husband, David, and her family attended the ceremony. West’s daughter, Rachel, accepted the award. “She [West] would say there are a
lot more deserving people out there,” said David. “We wish she could be here. We’re very proud of her.”
David said one of West’s contri-
butions to the community was the Leicester Soldiers Memorial Wall in the community center. “George [Mears] deserves a lot of
credit too,” said David. “He found a lot of the pictures.” Other activities West has helped
to organize or been involved in in- clude several youth groups, volun- teering for nursing homes and se- nior activities, supporting local and national charities, supporting the troops, organizing the area Veterans and Memorial Day services, helping
with efforts to feed the homeless and many other activities. Mears received the award for help-
ing to preserve the history of the Le- icester area. Mears credits his wife, Betsy, with helping him list and cat- egorize many of the grave markers in Bell United Methodist Church Cem- etery and other historical research of the area. He has also helped with the community center for the past four years including opening the center for events, placing signs for dinners, helping cut trees and brush on the ball fields, helping with the Veterans
Memorial Wall and much more. “Tis is a real honor,” said Mears
about receiving the Man of the Year award. “I don’t know why they chose me though.” Brookshire mentioned that this
was the first year in a long time the community center has chosen these honors. Tere will be a 10-year plaque in the community center on which the board will place the names of those chosen from each year. Mears and West will partici- pate in the county-wide award cer- emonies Oct. 28.
