country and track program is continuing its ascension among the state’s elite. The girls’ cross country team, currently ranked seventh in the state, is getting back to 100 percent healthy in time for the Mountain Athlet- ic Conference championships Tuesday (Oct. 19) at Erwin. Vogel and Audrey Garrett are

this year’s team returns a ton of talent. Coach Dean Duncan said Madison Emory has a very good shot at making all-state, and sophomore Katarina Rheul, whom Vogel has taken under her wing, has helped offset the loss of the graduated Justine Stocks. Vogel, who has participated
in three state championships, said the team as a whole is get- ting faster. Helping with the team’s
emergence as a state contender was a training model Duncan implemented several years ago that develops training methods geared to the athletes rather than making athletes fit a par- ticular style.
