Erwin HS Warriors win with grace

By Catherine Hunter Erwin coach Mike Sexton said he was

very proud of the way the team handled their big win over McDowell last week. Te Warriors scored 38 points in the first quar- ter of Friday’s (Oct. 8) game and defended against all of McDowell’s efforts to score. “Our team handled the whole situation

with class and graciousness,” Sexton said. After the strong first quarter, the Erwin

coaches brought out their starters to play for the remaining three quarters of the game. “Tese are a lot of guys who don’t get to

play much,” said Sexton. “It was great to see them get to play and perform.” Sexton said the first-string team played

exceptionally well, noting that in the first quarter Shaquan Curenton and Trey Clark intercepted passes and returned them for touchdowns. He added that the defense did an excellent job maintaining the shut out throughout the entire game. Te team is now focused on this week’s

game against T.C. Roberson. He projected that the upcoming game would be tough as

Roberson is on a winning streak. “Tey’re [Roberson] extremely big on the

line,” Sexton said. “Tey have a strong run- ning back, a strong quarterback along with good receivers. We expect it will be a very physical game.” With potential risks in the upcoming

game, the Erwin coaches are focusing on keeping the Warriors strong and healthy throughout the remaining three regular games of the season. Sexton said the team has several guys coming back from injuries and is getting healthy all the way around. Te Warriors are also racking up some

impressive stats. Garrett Brown surpassed 2,000 yards of passing this year. Last year, he passed for roughly 1,800 yards. “Tat’s a pretty big milestone,” said Sex-

ton. “Not a lot of people do it.” Erwin receivers Curenton and Clark cur-

rently lead Western North Carolina in pass receptions as well. For the next three games, the team is fo-

cusing on continuing to get better at what they do. Sexton said the Warriors’ chances of winning the 3-A conference title are good as long as they show up, play as they can and stay healthy.

The Barns of Leicester Old Sharpe barn

Neighbors say this barn off South

Turkey Creek Road is at least 70 to 80 years old or older. It was part of a farm belonging to Came Sharpe who raised his children in a home nearby. This intriguing old barn started

life as a long barn about 24 feet by 60 feet set on stones stacked on mounded earth. The roof and outer walls may have been added later. The back wall is made of stones.

The barn originally housed livestock and was used for tobacco. Photos by Catherine Hunter
