Sri Daya Mata: a Tribute
by Karen Lanza
ri Daya Mata, one of the first women in modern history to head a global religious movement, passed away on November 30, 2010, at 96. A forerunner of today’s increasing acceptance of women in spiritual leader- ship positions, Daya Mata served for more than 55 years as president of the Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (SRF/YSS), the international nonprofit reli- gious organization founded in 1920 by Indian yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi. Among Sri Yogananda’s foremost disciples, Daya Mata steadfastly carried out the aims and ideals he established for his society, including the dissemination of methods for attain- ing a personal relationship with the Divine; promotion of the essential unity of the world’s religions; and service to human- kind as one’s larger Self. A true mother of compassion, as her name implies, she emphasized the powers of prayer and meditation to uplift people and nations. Her greatest desire was to bring others to God. For more than 20 years, she was part of the small circle
S
of Sri Yogananda’s closest disciples, serving as his confidential secretary and later assuming greater spiritual and administra- tive responsibilities as the scope of the society’s activities grew. In the closing years of Sri Yogananda’s life, he began to speak openly of the prominent role she would play in the future. In 1955, three years after Sri Yogananda’s passing, Daya Mata succeeded Rajarsi Janakananda as president of SRF/ YSS. Until her passing, she was responsible for guiding the work of the society, overseeing its spiritual and humanitar- ian activities, including the worldwide dissemination of Sri Yogananda’s teachings and the establishment and guidance of temples, retreats and centers.
Sri Daya Mata’s writings and recorded talks are available in bookstores, online or through the Self-Realization Fellowship, at
Yogananda-SRF.org. For more information, see ad, page 21.

Feeling run-down after the busy holiday season? Fighting off winter colds or flu? Besides a hot bowl of chicken soup, several other effective natural remedies can nourish and heal the body and soul. Try some of these to help strengthen your immune system and prevent or treat winter ills.
Cinnamon tea. Containing antifungal, antibacterial, antivi- ral, anti-parasitic and antiseptic properties, this tea not only tastes great, it improves the way we feel.
Oscillococcinum. This useful homeopathic can be taken daily during the cold and flu season. Take one capful each morning as a preventive measure or take a whole vial if symptoms are coming on.
Herbs such as echinacea, astragalus, ligusticum, schizandra and elderberry offer immune-enhancing, antibacterial and antiviral benefits.
Vitamins A, C and E and the minerals selenium and zinc all assist the immune system and can help ease cold and flu symptoms.
Oscillococcinum B-vitamins. Taken orally or intravenously, these can help decrease the symptoms and duration of colds and the flu.
During the initial onset of a cold or flu, simple treatments can be done at a naturopath’s office.
Myer’s cocktail IV, consisting of vitamins and minerals.
