Rotary in Clitheroe Rotary has a motto “Service before Self” and that is just what has been happening in Clitheroe and District over the last twelve months. The two Rotary Clubs Ribblesdale and Clitheroe have been involved in supporting local, national and international projects. “ Thanks for Life” is perhaps our largest project world wide that has been running for over 20 years with an aim to eradicate polio. We had a shop in Castle Street Clitheroe last January and February displaying all aspects of the work being undertaken in the last few places in the world where there is still polio. While preparing this display the earthquake hit Haiti and we erected a Shelter box tent in the shop to support our collection showing people what they were contributing to. As is the norm the people of the Ribble Valley were very generous. Very aware of the situation in Afghanistan and the involvement of local personnel, several events for “Help the Heroes” were organised by both clubs. We have a large programme of Youth Opportunities, including Youth Speaks, Young Chef, Young Photographer and Young Writer, where all the local schools are encouraged to put entries in. The results have been quite extraordinary displaying terrific talent and imagination. We have also run a Technology Tournament for secondary school teams to compete against each other at basic, intermediate, and advance levels in a full day workshop, building working models. One activity which nearly everyone knows about is the Community Bonfire where the Rotary Clubs join with Round Table and Lions to give Clitheroe and District a great but safe, bonfire night experience. At the same time raising funds for Life Education and the local Multiple Sclerosis support group. At Christmas our store collections contribute to providing residents over 80 years of age and living on their own with a food hamper that is done with the Mayor of Clitheroe. Throughout the year we have been involved in many more activities whether it be transporting, supporting or funding, the less fortunate but deserving. This a simple over view of a Rotary year but if you are interested in knowing more of what we do, Google rotary, or ring: 01200 424240
