DAVID O CAMPBELLN BROADWAY AND BEYOND

In January of this year, he put his love of musical

theatre to task and recorded a host of beloved musical theatre songs for a CD aptly called On Broadway. The col- lection spans the origins of Broadway’s best beginning with “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin” from Oklahoma to the latest new musical coming up on the Great White Way called Catch Me If You Can and his recording of the song, “Goodbye.” The Rage Monthly spoke with David Camp- bell, a man with a leading man voice that is a perfect fit on the selections presented for On Broadway. Right off the bat, listening to the orchestrations and

arrangements that David Campbell pairs with his voice are of the highest quality and provided by a 40-piece orchestra. They were created by the noted arranger, Bill Elliott and performed under the musical direction of Rob Fisher. Commenting on this collaboration, Campbell says, “Rob gave me one of my first big breaks in New York in musical theatre by casting me in Encores! We did Babes in Arms together. He and I always wanted to do more stuff together because we love working with each other. Rob suggested bringing Bill Elliott on board. I never knew Bill before but once I read his rap sheet and how amazing he was…Bill is one of the last great arranging geniuses. He knows how to tip his hat to old-school Hollywood or old-school Broadway. He has a great flair. He knows it all. He knows where all the bodies are buried in arrangement land (laughter). I knew if I put the experts in charge…they would lead me down the right path.” David Campbell has also released a companion DVD

that explores the actual history of each of the theatre songs presented with On Broadway. Campbell actually

name in Australia for his role as Johnny O’Keefe in the musical theatre production of Shout! He created a phenomenon Down Under with his talent in the 2001 show. His initial exposure to American audiences was back in 1997 when his cabaret act received sensational reviews from the New York press when he played at the famous Rainbow & Stars. A true Broadway baby at the time, Campbell was the youngest entertainer to headline the Rainbow & Stars, which just recently closed its doors in New York. Since then, he has continued to wow audiences in musical productions such as Carousel, Sunset Boulevard, Company and numerous other high-profile productions of musical theatre in Australia, the United States and across the globe.

sat down with as many legends of Broadway as possible to get the back-story on the creation and styles of some of the best including Steven Sondheim, Marc Shaiman, etc. He adds, “ When Sony came to me and asked, ‘what are you going to do next?’ It was very clear to me. I’m go- ing to do a Broadway record in New York with Rob Fisher. We’re going to do a documentary and we’ll interview all the writers and hopefully we’ll do a tour with all the orchestras. I didn’t know I’d be coming back to America as well. This sort of grand plan just jumped into my head. We can share part of the album process to get people into the album more. I really wanted to show how great Broadway was and is right now. Why these guys wrote these songs and what makes these songs important.” The songs run the gamut of musical theatre, there

are selections from Les Miserables, Chicago, Hello Dolly!, Guys and Dolls along with songs from nine other Broadway classics that make up the set for On Broadway. Does David Campbell have a current wish list of musi- cal theatre roles on the horizon? “I love the old-school stuff…Stop the World, I Want To Get Off is one that I think has a terrific score by Anthony Newley that should be done again. Then another one would be Half a Sixpence with Tommy Steele. When I was starting musical theatre, I loved this show. It’s a throwback to my English heritage with my grandmother. It’s a rollicking, great and fabu- lous score. You don’t hear much about that period of time…maybe Oliver or one or two other things. Look. I consider myself lucky to be still doing this. If anything came along, I’d probably jump at it!” David Campbell’s On Broadway is available now.
