allowed to register online this time round, due to new laws relating to internet poker in that country. This probably helped to establish a final table heavy with home grown talent with the top half dozen keeping most of the money in Irish hands. I feel that, without the restrictions on the French players, this event would almost certainly have set a new record this year.

The eventual champion was 28 year old Drogheda man John

Landy, winning his first ever major ranking event and picking up e50,600 in the process. Second place and e33,683 went to Eddie

Landy with Aidan Connelly picking up e25,538 for third spot. I managed to have a talk with the winner after his victory.

John is a Merchant Navy Officer who has been playing poker since 2004. He says his favourite player is Gus Hansen. John started playing at home with friends and then graduated to pub games and to playing online tournaments. He told me that the IPO was his first ever major event and that he has never cashed in a European ranking event before this. His previous biggest win was around e1,500.

I asked John how he felt

about his victory and he said: “I feel great. It’s a bit surreal. I don’t know what to think. I can’t believe it but it will probably sink in

tomorrow.” He told me that he has no plans for the money right now but he would love to go to Las Vegas in the future. There were three e100 + 10 side events over the weekend.

’’ The first of these was won by Tommy Geleziunas for e4,175 with Conor

O’Driscoll taking e2,900 for second place and Stanley Smith picking up e2,250 for third spot. The second side event was won by Robert Moore who took home e4,850 with David Morgan picking up e3,400 for second place and Matthius Verkuijl taking 2,650 for third spot. The final e100 event was won by Michael O’Neill for e4,775

with Barry Sedgwick taking e3,400 for second place and D. Cugudda picking up e2,580 for third spot. The e100 + 10 Pot Limit Omaha Double Chance event had a total of 91 runners and was won by England’s Pete Linton for e2,700. Second place and e1,900 went to Sander Springer with F. Sandberg picking up e1,250 for third place.

The final event of the weekend was a Scalps tournament with a e75 entry fee, plus e25 for the scalp and a e10 registration fee. The winner, picking up e3,285, was Rupinder Bedi with Paul Hannigan taking e2,325 for second place and Matthius Verkuijl, taking another third place on the weekend and winning e1,535 this time. This tournament weekend is one of the most fun events of the

year and for many of the pro’s attending, is a chance to meet up with old friends and relax without the pressure of playing in a high buy in main event. The hotel bar always does brisk business over the weekend. This is not to say that the pro’s are not really trying. In fact, Neil Channing has stated that this is one of the poker tournaments he would most like to win. I for one am looking forward to seeing Neil and all the other players for next year’s International Poker Open.

Andreas Berggren took home the winner’s cheque of 586,000 SEK (e63,000) after taking down the Swedish Open 20,000 SEK (e2,100) NLH Main Event in October at the Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm. Oscar Kroon was runner-up for 428,000 SEK (e46,000). The field saw 119 runners and a prize-pool of 2,380,000 SEK (e257,000).
