OLP talks with Mark Alexander, CEO of Verdict Videos

Mark Alexander brings his experience as a veteran producer and television editor to the legal community. His company delivers a highly effective twist on presenting legal documentaries for settlement conferences and court. In the age of the ‘CSI Effect’, this unique type of presentation is exactly what viewers expect from attorneys.

Tell me about Verdict Videos.

Verdict Videos is a legal video production company that transforms legal briefs into television-style documentaries for use at pre-trial mediation and settle- ment. We blend the allegations in the complaint with professional narration, key and expert witness interviews, before and after photographs, recreations, day- in-the-life video footage and in some cases, accident reconstruction animation. Because our team has lengthy broadcast television and documentary film-making experience, the quality of our productions looks as if you are watching 20/20 or Dateline. Our settlement video productions have been extremely effective and we feel the key to our success is the television and legal consulting experience we bring to each case.

How did you get into this business?

After over 15 years in broadcast television I formed an independent video production company and as a volunteer with the L.A. County Sheriff Department I began producing documentaries for local and regional search and rescue teams. This led to a contract with a national search and rescue organization to produce a series of documentary videos. We produced video in particular that told the tragic story of a little boy who became lost while on a camping trip with his family in the mountains. Unfortunately, when the search and rescue team found him, it was too late. Later we videotaped his mother on camera recreating for us the four days of this horrible ordeal. It was incredibly powerful, touching and instructive at the same time. I knew then that I only wanted to produce documentaries that were meaningful and that directly affected people’s lives in a helpful way.

Legal work was always in the back of my mind as an area that I would like to explore, so I just

couldn’t resist the temptation of combining my video production skills with assisting consumer advo- cates that help people. It’s truly a win-win for me.
