Technology Movers & Shakers Cliff Shnier

A

few months ago, Cliff Shnier assumed the role of President of esi Specialists Inc, (www.esispecial- ists.com) a Toronto-based electronic discovery company with roots in litigation support that go back 20 years.

As those of you who know Cliff are aware, he has been an integral player in litigation support

and e-discovery since entering the industry in the late 1980's after having practiced law in Toronto. He has been a consultant, owner of his own service bureau, and a senior executive with major e-discovery and litigation sup- port service providers. While he continues his U.S. e-discovery consulting practice from his base in Arizona, Cliff’s role as President of ESI Specialists Inc. is his main focus and priority and in Canada. Over the years, Cliff frequently travelled to Toronto from Arizona, never becoming a stranger to his former city.

“Shnier’s knowledge, experience and reputation precedes him and we’re very fortunate to have such an eDiscov- ery icon to head the group” stated Steve Bula, esi’s Director of Operations. “His strong commitment and views from an unbiased eDiscovery perspective are available from his eDiscovery blogs and discourses over the years. His excellent experience will bolster ESI’s project management team.”

Canadian-based and owned ESI Specialists Inc. offers the legal, corporate and government communities com- prehensive document management and litigation support services. ESI Specialists Inc. offers collection and forensics to e-discovery processing and document hosting. ESI is the sole host and distributor in Canada of both CT Summation’s CaseVantage™ and of kCura’s Relativity™, two of the industry’s most popular review tools.

“The significance of hosting on Canadian soil cannot be overstated,” says Cliff, “either from the perspective of a Canadian law firm or corporation or from the perspective of a law firm or corporation in the United States. Canada and the European Union have legislation that protects privacy in electronic data.”

“Canada is certified by the European Union as compliant with its privacy directives, and therefore data from Canada or Europe that might be subject to restrictions about taking it into the United States, may be kept in or taken into Canada and hosted on servers there. This provides counsel in both Canada and the US with access to data stored on servers in the North American Eastern time zone and supported by a staff that speaks the same English and understands the legal and discovery environment.”
