AUGUST 2010 THE RIDER /45
Carol Steiner and Jumpin’ Jax make an amazing team
By Mallory Hendry.
The Simcoe, Ontario native has racked up over 10,500 AERC miles since starting on the long distance circuit in 1982 and says she’s never looked back.
“I was hooked. I love riding horses – a definite pre-req- uisite for anyone thinking about starting ‘endurance riding’,” Steiner says. “I love travelling and camping with the horses. To ride and see the miles of country, inaccessible from a car, in remote areas, all from the back of my horse is absolutely phenomenal.”
Apparently Jumpin’ Jax is just as passionate. Although he comes across as a “sleeper”, Steiner says the trail brings him to life. This is evident from the team’s accomplishments. Last year alone Jax earned his FEI WEG CoC at the FITS ride
Equestrian Games - Jumpin’ Jax and Carol, as a combination, ranked 4th (fourth) in the (Meyden) FEI Open World Endurance Rankings, out of 4135 ranks.
Jumpin’ Jax and Carol earned the 160 km (100 mi) Canadian Endurance Championship title on July 1, 2010, winning the Individual Gold and the Team Gold medals.
Their Team consisted of Tom Paleczny on Raeme’s Magician, Lousie Richardson on Sultan Toscan, Carol Lewin on Queen’s Legacy and Carol on Jumpin’ Jax.
The July 1 Endurance competitions were sanctioned by OCTRA, AERC, Endurance Cana- da, and FEI while the July 2, 3, 4, Ride & Tie, and Competitive Trail Rides were sanctioned by OCTRA and CaLDRA
in Florida, a 160 km ride completed in 9 hours, 25 minutes. He completed the Kentucky Cup (test event for the World Equestrian Games) in 11th place, and finished Top Ten in AERC Northeast Region again.
“He wants to know what’s beyond the next turn,” Steiner explains. “He has ability, strength, speed - and absolutely thrives in this sport.”
The bay gelding is an eleven year old Arabian/Hanoveri- an cross standing 15.1 hands high. He became the other half to Steiner’s competitive whole in 2006 and has a total of 1 550 career endurance miles. After training for over a year to be in top condition, the new pair made their debut in March 2008. Together they’ve had 27 starts, including 16 top tens, 9or which were top fives, and one win and 3 Best Condition Awards. They placed third last year in Endurance Canada and were ranked fourth in the FEI world rankings. No small accomplishments, and according to Steiner, no small thanks due to her “Jaxi Taxi” and his ability to anticipate and invite the challenges ahead.
“Deep sand, mud, rivers, rocks, flats, mountains - he tackles it all with gusto,” Steiner enthuses. “Jax is kind of like my ‘all-terrain pony”
Following their great year in 2009, including an 11th place finish at the Kentucky Cup - test event for the World
