Ontario Reining Horse Association News President’s Message

We are now past the mid-point of our show season and it’s unbelievable how quickly the time has passed, but we have had a great sum- mer so far.

I want to thank all the people who have worked so hard to bring us the shows to date – to name just a few, Ron Lubinski of Y NOT Farms, John and Sharon Fletcher, Dan and Berenice Fletcher, Ken and Dana Van Alstine, Maureen Venables of Kemptville College. Many people do not realise how much work goes into putting on a horse show and we truly appreciate the efforts of those who do it. We had some changes to our Board this summer – Chris Renny, a Director, took on the role of Treasurer, and Wendy Dyer, a long time O.R.H.A. supporter and Board member, stepped down from the Board. Wendy has been the behind-the-scenes “chief cook and bottle wash- er” for as long as many of us can remember. Although she will still be our O.E.F. representa- tive, and will continue to do data entry for our books, we will miss her presence and extensive historical knowledge at the Board meetings. But as she frees up her time to devote to more riding, we wish her well and look forward to still seeing her at the shows.

I would like to also thank Brian Stewart, our former Treasurer and Director, for all his work on the Board, and wish him all the best.

And if any member has interest in joining the Board, please let me know – president@orha.on.ca – it is a very worthwhile experience.

Congratulations are in order for Jason Richards and Wimpys Tinseltown (owned by John Fletcher) for being Limited Open and Intermediate Open Finalists at the NRHA Derby, and to Paige Carter-Fleetwood who placed 5th and 8th at the AQHAYouth World Cup this Summer on a horse donated by Todd Crawford. Paige had to incorporate reining into her riding skills to qualify for this event, and did a terrific job under the tutelage of Tim and Lisa Stanton, who travelled to Oklahoma to coach her for the event.

Paige had to show in Showmanship, Trail, Hunter under Saddle, Huntseat Equitations, Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Western Rid- ing and Reining, and competed against 31 other young people, with 16 countries represented (Canada placed 7th overall).

And finally, on a housekeeping note, please note that there is a correction to the Sired Stakes Futurity at the Grand Finale in October – horses may only be shown ONE-HANDED. I hope you are enjoying your Summer and I look forward to seeing you all in the warmup pen.

We are delighted to announce that we have a new Youth President - K.D. Grainger . We know she will be a great role model to our Youth members and we look forward to having her lead the ORHyA for the rest of this year.

YOUTH COMMITTEE WELCOME

and CONGRATULATIONS

The ORHyA youth are back again for another great year. So far this season, O.R.H.A. members have displayed great enthusiasm for the sport of Reining with scores that make even the most experienced rider smile, and their dedi- cation to the youth continues outside the show ring.

The ORHyA is delighted to announce the reintroduction of the highly successful Penny Challenge that was introduced last year, along with a 50/50 draw. All proceeds will go towards the youth.

Here’s how the Penny Challenge works:

- Youth 13 and under and Youth 14 to 18 have two separate containers

- For each penny deposited in the containers, that container’s team is awarded one point - However, any silver coins added (nickels, dimes, quarters) are deductions (-5, -10, -25). - Any toonies, loonies, or bills are considered donations to the ORHyA youth and are not counted either way in the Challenge itself So join in and watch the fun as pennies are brought in and the youth wait anxiously to see who wins the Challenge.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

We all know and respect Joanne Milton, our Show Secretary and ORHA Director, for all her accomplishments, but we recently learned she has yet another feather in her cap.

Joanne helped form the Ontario Sidesaddle Association, to promote interest in riding sidesaddle, and she and her Association were

recently profiled in Horse Canada magazine. Riding sidesaddle is a lot more difficult than it looks, but Joanne has performed a full reining pattern doing it!

Kudos to Joanne - yet another member the ORHA is proud to call its own.

“Jason Richards & Wimpys Tinseltown on Fire at Canadian Reining Classic”

Kodak’s first Open Derby at Fletcher’s Horse World in Waterford will leave competitors and spectators talking about the show’s success for some time. Fletcher’s very own trainer Jason Richards took top honours receiving one of the highest combined scores of 153, in Ontario. Entries flooded into this top facility from

Canada and the United States. 29 of the top hors- es and riders competed in the prestigious Kodak Derby Saturday night and had everyone on the edge of their seats. This was some of the finest competition for Reining in Ontario. Hall of Fame judges Dr. Jim Morgan DVM and Clark Bradley of Finley University in Ohio were proud to be participating in the event at Fletchers Horse World and noted that this was truly some of the toughest reining competition they have seen in some time. Canadian competitors have a lot to be proud of as this sport’s professionalism and level of competition continues to grow and improve. A Continental Saddle was awarded to one lucky competitor which was sponsored by Roy and Joan Ionson of Ionson’s Saddlery. John & Sharon Fletcher are proud of their new trainer Jason Richards and look forward to future compe- titions.
