CANADIAN LONG DISTANCE RIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Competitors from 11 countries and 5 Canadian provinces were attracted to the great venue in New Lowell, Ontario, July 1 to 4. Organizers did a first rate job and everyone agreed they would love to come back to do this again.

DAY ONE – ENDURANCE discipline – FEI 100 miles, 75 Miles and 50 Miles Riders reported the course was exceedingly well marked and fast with lots of cool clean water available at inter- vals for their horses. The weather was great, and the hills with their amazing views were in the early cooler part of the day. In true sportsmanship spirit all the pit crews helped each other. Canadian crews Ron Phair and Ken Sturley leap frogged with their USA counterparts resulting in one rider remembering a 10 mile section

10.41.59 and Gregory Smetek of Columbia finished 8th in 11:03:00. Rounding out the prestigious Top Ten positions were Canadians Carol Steiner of Ontario 9th in 11:04:12 chased by Gail Jewell of British Columbia 10th in 11:05:10. USA rider Mary Wills fin- ished in 11th with Canadians Charlene Hendriks 12th, and Louise Richardson 14th. Open Canadian riders Tom Paleczny finished in 11:12:42, Chrystal Woodhouse 13:26:15 and Yvette Vinton 13:40:55. For comparison, the final horse completed the course in 15:12:03 for a well deserved 19th place.

Highlight of the 75 mile Endurance race with 9 horses starting, and 7 complet- ing was the winner, Canadian Robert Gie- len from the Maritimes finishing in 7:13:26 almost an hour and a half ahead of the next horse and winning both the coveted Best Condition Award and the High Veterinary Score Award. The next day this amazing athlete teamed up with his riding/running partner Audrey Lapointe riding for the Quebec Team to win the 20 mile Ride and Tie Champi- onship.

Second in the 75 mile was Charlotte Byrd of Great Britain in 8:42:27, Berit Stonebrink of Sweden was 3rd in 9:03:00, Haime Levy of Venezuela 4th in 9:35:02, followed by two Canadians Julie Phair 5th in 10:18:40 and Ruth Sturley 6th in 10.18.41. Finishing 7th was Namibia rider Kordula Voigts in 10:41:00.

being pit crewed four different times by different crews.

An impressive number of land own- ers were on course cheering the competi- tors progress, however, the final loops with slightly flatter but more technical trail and sandy footing took its toll. Of the 31 starters, only 19 horses passed all the veterinary checkpoints together with the final veterinary inspection and trot out. Winner of the FEI 100 Mile, in a rid- ing time of 9hrs:36mins:45secs, was Car- men Romer of the Netherlands on Destiny Gold also winning the Best Condition Award. Close behind her in 2nd place was Heather Hoyns of the USA in 9:52:35 on Wileaway Farahs Comet. The next three horses came in almost together, Emily Matthews of Great Britain placing 3rd in 10:24:30, Meg Sleeper of the USA 4th in 10:24:31 who earned the High Vet Score award and open rider Wendy Bejarano was 5th in 10:24:32. Anna Wucher of Namibia came 6th in 10:40:06, Moises Birnbaum of Venezuela a close 7th in

Another rider from Quebec, Richard Curry and Harmo- ny were 16th as well as being presented with the Top Standardbred Award - quite an accomplishment for Richard and Har- mony on their first 50 miler!

Manitoba riders really shone in this event - they brought three horses and all three horses finished with Prue Critchley, Aime St. Vincent and Jessica Manness

DAY TWO – RIDE and TIE disci- pline – Involving two riders alternat- ing riding and running using only one horse. When the rider gets out in front they tie the horse (to a tree) and run on, their partner reaches the horse and rides to catch up and pass their partner and repeat the process. 20 mile Championship Gold Medal winner was the Quebec Team of Robert Gielen and Audrey Lapointe riding Mariah (owned by Wendy MacCoubrey) finishing in an excellent time of 2:58. The Silver Medal went to the Manitoba team of Prue Critchley, Christopher Critchley and their horse In the Limelight choosing an excellent strategy of having Prue do most of the riding since Christopher prefers running finishing in 3:17. Bronze Medal went to Ontario Juniors Emily Wright and Carley Bradley on Ice Dancer in 3:47 with thanks to Deanna Ramsay for riding as their adult sponsor. Ontario daughter and father team of Solstice Pecile and Brune Pecile riding GMS Shanteeta Bay were 4th in 4:26. 10 mile Ride and Tie – Lesley Danko and Dault Crocket on Breyor were 1st in 1:30 closely followed by Rueben McCallum and Kellie Sybersma on Kari Miniea in 1:32 for

DAY THREE – COMPETITIVE TRAIL discipline – a two day 80 mile with 40 miles each day. In Competitive Trail, teams are three riders with the best two scores to count. Because of the oppressive heat conditions and humidity, the 80 mile ride was shortened to 70 when 10 miles was cut off the Sunday ride. In conjunction with the championship a 25 mile “Mileage” ride was run on Saturday and a 25 mile Novice CTR on Sunday.

TEAM QUEBEC TAKES HOME GOLD – It seems just over the Que- bec border is a hot bed of riders who can now lay claim to owning the GOLD! For the first time ever, Que- bec had the depth of talent to field teams in all three long distance disci- plines and their hard work and perse- verance paid off.

Team Gold Medal goes to Que- bec 1, being Wendy MacCoubrey earning Individual Gold and 1st Lightweight riding Agils Royal Smarty a young Anglo Arab with only 6 penalty points over the two days and an excellent future in this sport; Joann Kearnan Individual Bronze Medalist and 2nd Lightweight riding Breanna a pure- bred Arab and Michelle Dorie 4th Lightweight and 6th Overall with

Antenat also a purebred Arab. Individual Silver, 1st Heavy- weight and 4th place for the Ontario Team 2 went to Doug Price riding Khofire who only accrued 15 penalty points over the two days, unfortu- nately his other teammates did not finish. Team Silver Medal went to Ontario 1 riders Roxanna Mollohan 3rd Lightweight and 4th Overall and Elaine Steele 4th Heavyweight and 8th Overall.

Team Quebec would like to thank Club Equestre in St. Lazare for their support and the great job they do maintaining the trails these horses train on. Now the Quebec Team has their sights set on the 2012 CaLDRA Canadian Championships in British Columbia.
