Welcome to the first Nonprofit Excellence in Our Community: A Directory & Resource Guide, a partnership of Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) and albemarle Magazine.

onprofit organizations act as a social safety net, providing food, clothing, and shelter to our most vulnerable citizens. They make our community more vibrant and rich by promoting arts, education, and culture. Nonprofits employ us, contribute dollars to our economy, and engage us in making our community stronger. A thriving nonprofit sector signals an attractive and healthy community for residents, government, and businesses, and contributes to sustainable regional growth.

N

CNE is a local resource center dedicated to strengthening nonprofits in the greater Charlottesville region. We provide education and training, gather and share local, state, and national resources, and mentor nonprofit organizations at all stages of development. We offer best practice tools, training, and resources with one goal in mind: to increase the efficiency and the effectiveness of area nonprofits.

Ever growing, CNE now has more than 260 members—area nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, as well as businesses and consultants who support and provide services to the nonprofit sector. This publication introduces you to the work of our membership and to the scope and impact of the nonprofit sector in this region. Some of the CNE members featured on these pages may be familiar to you; others we invite you to get to know.

It is our hope that after reading Nonprofit Excellence in Our Community you will take action: volunteer to mentor a child, join a nonprofit board of directors, donate to a cause that you discover here, or consider your charitable giving in a new light. Your action, large or small, is critical to maximizing the potential of area nonprofits. Whatever you do, don’t stand on the sidelines. Invest in our community.

Sincerely,

Cristine Nardi Executive Director Center for Nonprofit Excellence
