Rare Book School (RBS) provides continuing education for adult students from all walks of life to study the history of books and manu- scripts with leading scholars and profession- als. Offering week-long courses—from book- bindings and medieval manuscripts to fi ne prints and digital texts—RBS engages libra- rians, academics, book dealers, conservators, collectors, and amateurs in intensive, hands- on learning with original materials from its unparalleled collection and UVA’s Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. The School is directed by Michael F. Suarez, S.J., University Professor and Honorary Curator of Special Collections.

Rockfi sh Valley Community Center (RVCC) in Nelson County, Virginia, is “Where Community Happens!” Housed within our 1938 school building and grounds are the Hamner Theater, the Treasure Chest Thrift Store, Friday lunch at Claudia’s Cafe, winter-to-spring indoor Community Markets, skatepark, playground, and artist studios. RVCC is a non-profi t, community-based, membership organization that houses and facilitates recreational, educational and cultural programs for the enjoyment of Nelson County citizens and visitors of the Rockfi sh Valley. In addition to our programs, we are able to provide space for offi ces & studios, for meetings and events.

The Foundation sponsors Spruce Creek Park, the Rockfi sh River Trails and NELSON SCENIC LOOP in the Rockfi sh and Tye River watersheds of Nelson County. It maintains two educational websites that celebrate the natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of surrounding communities. www.rockfi shvalley.org and www.nelsonscenicloop.com.


Events include the LOOP Grand Discovery Days, semi annual Star Watch and Annual Kite Festival, regular bird walks, and programs on the local geology, environment and Hurricane Camille. DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED AND WELCOME. Donations can be made on line.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program was established in 1996 to provide academic scholarships, service opportunities and leadership experiences for young African Americans of outstanding promise. Scholars are provided with fi nancial resources to attend some of the fi nest colleges and universities in the country. Scholars are each awarded $40,000 to be used at the college or university of their choice. Scholars are also provided with the nurturing and mentorship to succeed and fl ourish in college and beyond. The Program has a 100 percent graduation

Founded in 1973, Second Street Gallery is Charlottesville’s premier contemporary art space. SSG’s primary mission is to enliven Central Virginia through access to the best in contemporary art and artists; and to inspire new ways of thinking, seeing, and doing. The gallery stages 10-14 exhibitions annually and provides education workshops to the Boys and Girls Club and to area public schools while also offering community programs for families and adults.


The gallery is sustained by membership dues, personal and corporate giving, and grants.
