Home “What is Zumba?” is what I hear a

lot from many people and if I am not hearing that question, I am hearing, “I am so addicted to Zumba!” Zumba is a licensed name for the prechoreographed group exercise (aerobic) class that is popping up ev- erywhere. It started in the garage of an unknown instructor and then be- came a well known infomercial. Soon it grew to be one of the most popular and most attended classes throughout the nation.

Zumba is a combination of all

types of Latin dance, hip hop, meran- gae, kickbox and even disco at times. Each song has a choreographed rou- tine that the instructor will teach and re- peat until that song is over. After each song, there is a short break and new movements begin again. The music is very upbeat and each movement goes to the beat perfectly. There are times when you may stop dead in the middle of a routine and change directions just because the music changes as well.

NOVEMBER 2010 What is Zumba?

But it all makes sense, and it flows with ease and smooth transitioning. Many enjoy this class because of

the high energy and rhythms that it gives. You can let all your inhibitions go and shake and shimmy your way to a healthier, fitter person. Everyone feels intimidated when they first step foot into class, but it all goes away when the music starts and you know that everyone was once in a beginner too. Many enjoy it because you get a great workout and feel like you have worked every part of your body with- out even realizing it. Women and men of all ages and fitness levels can attend this class. Even if you are on the wrong foot, you manage to have a great time. Most gyms and local fitness clubs have Zumba classes. They have even man- aged to turn this high energy class into a Zumba Aqua class at some gyms. This is a great way to get no impact on your legs and still get a great workout! Zumba has branded clothing to wear so that you feel like you are even more in the mood. Lose clothing and com- fortable workout shoes are the best at- tire, but many wear dance shoes and leggings as well.

Many enjoy it because you get a great workout and feel like you have worked every part of your body without even realizing it.

“I can’t live without doing my

Zumba class every day!” says Judee of Palm Desert. She is a member of World Gym in Palm Desert and loves taking “her” Zumba classes!” She has built a family there and although Judee may not be very coordinated, it makes her feel young and virile. Judee says, “I never miss my Zumba class.” There are other classes out there

that are Latin or Hip Hop based, and may be just as much fun, but the com- bination of music, instruction and high energy that Zumba brings, gives you the need to return to class each week. Check your local gyms to find a

convenient time to try it. You will love it!
