MAKING
ALLOWANCES One of the

best ways for children to learn about sav- ing, spending, budgeting, and
the value of money is to have them get a weekly allowance in return for work they perform around the house. Tis “money-doesn’t-grow- on-trees” approach instills kids with the idea that people have to work for money. Having put in the effort to get the money they need to buy things for themselves, children then begin to assess whether the object they are purchasing is worth the effort it took to earn the money to buy it. Using this approach, chil- dren may then go on to explore sales coupons and other promotions that lower the purchase prices of desir- able goods, making them more as- tute consumers.
HINT: In time, children may be
taught that investing goes one step beyond saving.
Today’s economic environment
gives parents an opportunity to have honest conversations with their children about why it’s important to save and manage money. September is College Savings Month. Te fi- nancial decisions you make now can determine how much you can help your children with college tu- ition bills. Group members stand with garden owner Jack Jarvis, right. Sixteen individuals, including
many members of the Weaver- ville Tree Board and Weaverville Garden Club, traveled Aug. 7 to the Jarvis Japanese Gardens near Mars Hill, the living artistic cre- ation of Jack Jarvis. The creation is now a 14-year
gem of a garden and home base for Jarvis’s successful landscaping business. With the owner as tour guide, the group first explored his large bonsai collection, in- cluding newly cultivated plants and specimens obtained abroad that range from hundreds to over a thousand years old. The collection is entered through an Oriental-style carved gate. Jarvis also teaches the art of
bonsai and sells plants from the collection, but the necessity of giving close attention to the plants and watering them daily let the visitors know that this is a project only for the most dedi- cated gardeners.
Beyond the bonsai collection,
the Jarvis garden extends to five acres. There are evergreens and deciduous conifers planted in clusters, along with f lowering perennials and a variety of other specimen trees in the midst of large grassy areas. A striking design element is
the laying of textures and forms evident when gazing up the mountainsides. A large central pond was almost obscured by the lotus plants that recently completed their yearly display of blooms.
Serving North Buncombe, Madison and
Yancey Counties since 1979.
