Where we worship
Barnardsville Baptist Church
By Loren Metts If you have lived in the North Buncombe community
for very long, there is a good chance you may be familiar with either the history or outreach of Barnardsville Baptist Church. Every June for the past four years, BBC has sponsored
the Big Ivy Summer Blast. Tis annual outreach event is held at the Big Ivy Community Center and is a day full of free activities such as music, crafts, swimming, games, inflatables, gospel preaching and lots of good food. “Te Summer Blast has really grown over the years and God has used it in lots of ways,” Pastor Jim Hooper said. “Nearly everyone in our church works to make this event happen. Everything we do is free of charge and it is a very special day for our entire community. God has used it to reach many people with the love of His gospel and we are com- mitted to hosting it again next summer.” Barnardsville Baptist’s outreach certainly does not stop
here. Each Christmas, BBC helps the Samaritan’s Purse by serving as a shoebox drop-off center and by helping staff their Boone distribution center. Te church also supports the North Buncombe Samaritan’s Ministry and WNC Rescue Mission. BBC members are also involved in

various mission projects in Honduras. Tey also work with the Carpenter’s Heart on other community outreach projects such as this month’s ‘Opera- tion Soul Saver’, providing shoes and back-to-school supplies to over 300 area children. As for the church’s history, Barnardsville Baptist stands as another of
the oldest churches in Buncombe County. Founded in October 1821, the church was originally called Big Ivy Baptist Church. Pastor Robert Patterson led the congregation for 36 years. Te church first met on the property approximately where the Barnardsville Church of God is currently located. Te first church building was in disrepair by the turn of the century so the congregation agreed to move and build their second building near the pres- ent elementary school location. It was in 1921 that the construction of the third and present sanctuary began. Te church later changed its name to Barnardsville Baptist in September 1959 at the same time of its fellowship hall completion. Hooper and his wife Caressa have served at BBC for the past five years.
Hooper is a 1980 graduate of Enka High School. He has worked in Chris- tian ministry since 1997 and served as pastor at Clairendon Baptist Church before moving to Barnardsville. One of his favorite scripture passages is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17: ‘Terefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!’ “I believe God has a purpose for each of us as individuals and as churches.
It would be best if we stopped comparing ourselves and focus more on what we have in common instead,” Hooper said. “We must keep the Word of God the main thing, staying committed to taking the gospel to our world on purpose.” He continued, “Churches of all sizes are struggling these days but the Church will survive because Jesus Christ established it. Te Church will stand regardless of any challenges or difficult times in the future.” Barnardsville Baptist offers a traditional style of worship at 11 am on
Sundays, with Bible study and youth/children’s choir on Wednesday eve- nings. Te church also offers the AWANNA children’s program on Sunday nights for kids of all ages. Contact the BBC office at 626-2610 for more information about the church, its ministries and services.
