COUNTY NEWS Benton County Coroner’s Office first to be accredited

Te Benton County Coroner’s Office in July became the first Coroner’s Office in the state to be accredited, according to Coroner Daniel R. Oxford. Te accreditation was awarded by the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. “Te Coroner’s Office staff and I have been

working hard the last year and a half to make this office shine. We have made numerous pol- icy changes within the office and with outside agencies. We have attended numerous training classes, in order to stay on top of the continu- ally changing science,” he said. “It is our goal to provide the people of Benton County with competent, compassionate medicolegal death investigations.” Oxford said his office has updated its website

to include the statistical data of their daily oper- ations. “We are trying to keep the public aware of what we are doing, while protecting the identity and location of the deceased and their families. We also join with other county depart- ments by submitting safety alerts on the Benton County website homepage.” Te website can be found at: www.co.benton.ar.us/coroner

or

ing in the right direction of professionalism and service.” To maintain accreditation, the county office

must conduct internal audits every year and participate in an external audit every five years as well as supply training for all deputies annu- ally. Accreditation is just one component of the BCCO quality assurance program, which also

includes proficiency testing, continuing educa- tion, and other programs to help the office pro- vide better overall service to the criminal justice system. Accreditation is a means to demonstrate to law enforcement agencies, the court system and to the public that the Coroners Office is meet- ing established standards, according to Oxford.
