INDULGENCES work out with martin alonzo
Would you drive your car with a broken or poorly
aligned chassis? Then why would you use your body with a poorly aligned musculo-skeletal system? Just like driving your faulty aligned car, using a body that is poorly aligned results in a break down of its structural systems ( tissues, connective tissues, joints, bones, etc). Unlike a car, once you destroy your body, you can not simply pur- chase another. Asymmetries, muscle imbalances, poor or faulty kinetic chain pattern movements and inflexibility all lead to improper movement patterns, improper load- ing of joints, improper muscle recruitment, poor neural engrams; injuries that become repetitive and manifest compensatory movement patterns, that eventually lead to the complete breakdown of tissues and connective tissues ( muscle, ligament, tendon and cartilage). This scenario can usually be avoided by following a
maintenance program of structural care addressing the fascia and muscle system. Corrective exercise (proper strengthening of muscle groups and the integration into the kinetic chain) is also part of structural maintenance but is complex and individualistic to the needs of the client. The proper use of apparatuses like a foam roll or tennis balls are an invaluable and easy way to administer self myofacial release techniques (a form of soft tissue manipulation done by yourself) that can literally save your joints and save you from avoidable injuries due to reasons already explained. The restorative affect of using self myofacial techniques is very powerful and extremely effective for injury prevention and rehab. If you have trouble stretching muscles or getting into effective stretches then try addressing the fascia first. Fascia in- cases muscles and muscles control joints and movements of joint structures. All the postural abnormalities I have worked on have
had facial and muscle length tension imbalances that lead to irregularities in the mechanics of joints and the changing of proper curvatures of the spine. Stretching is fundamental in an exercise routine and in the correction of postural and biomechanical abnormalities, since ex- ercising is a form of applied stress to tissues, it inherently breaks down and tightens tissue structures; exercising without addressing the constant tightening of these tissue structures is just like driving your car down the street and never changing the oil and tires. Eventually… something will give.
