“My father says almost the whole world’s asleep. Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to. He says only a few people are awake…

And they live in a state of constant total amazement.” – Patricia Graynamore, from the movie Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)

This is one of my favorite movie lines of all times. Joe Versus the Volcano was recommended to me because it has sailing, tropical islands, humor, fantasy and a great sound track. Actors Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Lloyd Bridges, and Abe Vigoda come to mind as standouts in the picture, and it has so many one-liners that resonate with the way I live that I continue to watch it again and again. Like many of my film recommendations, most

people respond with “I can’t believe you liked that flick!” or “Huh? I didn’t get it.” It’s okay that many don’t understand. The point is that I strive to be one of those people walking around in a state of constant total amazement; about life, our world, science, technology, humanity...about everything, great and small, near or far. I want everything to be light-heart- ed and for everyone to smile and laugh all the time. Even household chores should bring joy and presence. Call me crazy, but it’s true that I’m happy simply cleaning out the garage and vacuuming the house.

Of course, beyond chores, I absolutely love savoring different and new foods, learning about cultures and traditions, and traveling. Laughter is my panacea. Insects intrigue me to the extent that I will take an hour to watch a spider spin her web. Herons, sunflowers, and rainbows, especially double rainbows stop me in my tracks. I must stay with a rainbow until it fades away. Even the smell of rain on hot concrete will disrupt my walk and bring me back to my youth. I am blessed to own a sailboat and sailing as the sun sets into moonlit evenings is my refuge. Treading lightly, creating laughter, and living so perfectly intercon- nected with all things…what a wonderful existence we have! As I write at home on this gorgeous Sunday morning, I’m having an email conversation with a friend who’s sitting at a café in Southern France. Response time is only a few seconds. She just sent me photos of her baguette sandwich and another of an ancient fortress built into the mountain in the distance. The sky is perfectly clear and azure blue behind the centuries-old structure. Just like that, I’m virtually there smiling away the hours and it’s amazing! Miracles…every day, miracles and friends touch our lives and we are blessed.

We have an immensely important announcement to make here at Natural Awakenings. NA headquarters in Naples, Florida has been preparing for months, and we recently received the official press release. (See page 7) Our publishers across the country have been invited to build a national network of practitioners, businesses, and services called Natural Awakenings Network (NAN). What has become a huge success story created by our publishers in Puerto Rico, our national NAN program will be an ever-growing directory of A-Z products and services within the natural living arena. I begin building my Natural Awakenings Network for Greater Hartford immediately and will keep you informed of my progress. More information is forthcoming on how to become a service provider for NAN, and how to become a member, save money, promote local business and live a healthier, more sustainable life.

There is much to do, so let’s get to business! I hope you enjoy this very special issue on our Environment. Did you know Connecticut leads the list of energy efficient superstars? (See page 5) We have many terrific articles, happenings and ideas presented this October to coax you on your path to a more open and sustainable lifestyle. Remember to create time for the spaces between the notes of your lives. Breathe in all of the wonder that surrounds you each and every day.
