Viridian Energy - Power With Purpose by Beth Davis F
ounded in March 2009, Viridian Energy is not like other companies. Sure, they provide greener electricity at an affordable price, empowering customers and their inde-
pendent associates to make a difference simply by switching energy providers. And, they take a lower profit in order to deliver a higher quality product. They are committed to researching and executing sustainability projects internationally with the 7 Con- tinents in 7 Years Program and often organize local sustainability projects including a recent beach clean up at Sandy Hook, N.J. Viridian is out to make a difference—a difference in the lives of its customers, its independent associates, the local community, and even the world. All are admirable traits and all are aimed at making a posi-
tive impact in the lives of people and the environment in which we live. However, one program the company is especially proud of is the Viridian Fundraising Program. According to founder and CEO Michael Fallquist, the program offers an innovative way for organizations to raise funds without over-burdening their members. “It is the ultimate win-win situation, especially in this economic climate,” he explains. “It is a no-pressure way for charitable organizations to raise funds without ever having to ask for money.” Non-profit organizations can sign up and earn money for
each individual or small business that switches their energy supplier to Viridian through them. As people switch, money is earned for the organization, resulting in a $2 monthly residual check from every active customer that is referred. In addition to 501 (c)(3) organizations, other charities or fundraising entities such as churches, school groups, and youth sports teams can sign up for the program. Those who support these organizations save money by using greener, more affordable electricity; all the while helping the group raise funds. Fallquist launched Viridian because he saw a tremendous
business opportunity, and because he is passionate about the environment. As the COO of Commerce Energy, a large pub- licly listed natural gas and electricity retailer, he realized the
importance customer loyalty had on the success or failure of a company. He discovered a wildly successful energy company that used direct selling as a model and he knew without a doubt that he would use the same concept in his own business. Direct selling is actually very simple and has been around
for decades. Viridian works with independent associates and when someone signs up through that associate, he or she receives a referral fee each month for as long as the referral is a customer. It is empowering for the independent associates who are building a long-term, sustainable business simply by helping customers save money on their electric bill. “When I went down this path, what I didn’t anticipate was
the relationships I would develop with associates,” notes Fal- lquist. “The excitement, creativity, and motivation they get from selling is inspiring. It’s driving our company.” Enrolling with Viridian is easy. All you need is a recent
utility bill and a few minutes. Nobody comes to your house and nothing has to be installed. Two product options are offered so customers can choose which best suits their needs. Everyday Green is a 20 percent renewable energy option—
the minimum standard for Viridian—that is sourced from locally produced, high-quality renewable resources. This option is good for the conscience and the budget. For those that are more en- vironmentally conscious, the Green-e certified Pure Green rate plan offers 100 percent renewable energy content, sourced from locally produced, high-quality wind power. Fallquist is so passionate about creating a better environ-
ment and doing the right thing, he does what many CEO’s would never dream of doing. The company takes a lower profit in order to deliver a higher quality product. He says this allows them to offer the best of both worlds—greener electricity and affordable prices.
