Japanese Gardens in the Taconic Mountains

many come to mind, but one in particular is hidden in the Taconic Mountains. It’s a small, largely unknown, but cultur- ally rich town named Hubbardton. Hubbardton happens to be the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought on Vermont grounds, and directly adjacent to The Hubbardton Battlefield is one of the most special places in Vermont. Kit Davidson, the owner of the property calls it “The Taconic

L

Mountains Ramble,” but it is also known as the “Zen Gardens” by locals and college students from nearby Castleton State College and Green Mountain College. The 420-acre property has more than 12 miles of hiking trails,

Japanese Gardens (complete with waterfalls, ponds, and chairs to relax), incredible views of the Taconic and Adirondack Mountains, and natural beauty all around. Davidson encourages people to come and enjoy the property, and on most nice days you will find him hard at work on one of the many trails or in a garden. It’s a superb location for fall foliage trips, with distant mountain

views from all over the property, not to mention the drive to get there. Hubbarton is nestled directly in the Taconic Mountains, a short distance from both Lake St. Catherine and Lake Bomoseen, and close to the tourist towns of Middlebury and Burlington.
