and forgiveness. To further develop a conscious loving relationship, we need to know, accept and love ourselves deep- ly for everything we are and everything we’re not. The awareness of our true essence has


been hidden beneath survival responses learned early in life. Exposure to “nor- mal” societal expectations via education, television, advertising and family steeps us in fear and scarcity. Even in the best of childhoods we may have lost touch with vast portions of our authentic self by tak- ing to heart disapproval, censoring, harsh criticism, or ridicule from others. As a re- sult there are aspects of ourselves that we don’t accept and believe are unlovable. It’s most likely that we have traits


that need to change; for example, we may have a fear that we’re fundamen- tally flawed and don’t deserve love. Until we take the counter-experiential action of bringing genuine loving acceptance to the part of us that carries the fear, we can’t make room for receiving love from anyone else.


Acceptance and non-judgment inter-


rupt thought loops of draining energy fo- cused only on survival, and spontaneous- ly open us to vital life energy, which can bring transformation. Though the process of self-acceptance is simple, it’s not easy. It involves looking unflinchingly at our- selves, acknowledging both our strengths and limits, celebrating the former, and letting go of blame and contempt regard- ing limits. We may have strong judgments


against our limits; quite often we blame ourselves for not being enough this, and harshly criticize that we’re too that. For example, we might perceive ourselves as not worthy to have good things, such as considerateness, come our way and rail


against ourselves for being “too sensi- tive” when another person disregards our wishes.


Learning to accept ourselves goes


beyond willpower. It encompasses whole-person learning: exploring our experience through wonder and curios- ity, bringing harmony between the mind and body, and re-balancing the subtle energies of the body.
