CARRY IT ON: GREAT AMERICAN MOMENTS

IN WORD AND SONG I love the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, a truly magical outdoor amphitheater

terraced on a hillside in a rustic canyon. One of their current offerings is a late afternoon (the best time to be there) performances of prose, poetry and music. The productions theme pays homage to some of our nation’s most profound heroes and looks at the trials and tribulations through their eyes. Sing along and at the same time learn more about the poets, leaders, workers and activists that have made a difference. Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mother Jones and many more who, despite adversity, bravely pursue their personal quest to make the world a better place. You can enjoy a picnic before or after the performance. Runs Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. through September 26. 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. Topanga (midway between Pacific Coast Highway and the Ventura Freeway). TICKETS: 310.455.3723 or theatricum.com

OF GRAPES AND NUTS The six-week Los Angeles premiere is produced by the Sea Glass Theatre

Company marking the 20th anniversary of this award-winning comedy. An outrageous, yet spot-on satire of two John Steinbeck classics: The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, which was met with praise during its 1990 world premiere in Chicago. “It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility”. That opening line strangely summarizes the heartbreak of The Grapes of Wrath and sets the tone of this clever show. Tom and Lenny travel with Ma and Pa Joad from Oklahoma to California, where they meet up with old friend John Casey and help him bring a union to a peach farm run by a woman named Curly. Undoubtedly, Steinbeck would roll over in his grave if he knew...but you never know . . . he might laugh his ass off! Runs September 18 through October 24 at the Victory Theatre Center’s Little Vic Theatre, 3324 West Victory Blvd. Burbank. TICKETS: 818.745.5537 or seaglasstheatre.org

PARASITE DRAG If you are in the mood for a heavy drama, Parasite Drag is about a smalltown Illinois fam-

ily living a haunted life. Estranged brothers, Gene and Ronnie, are forced back together to make arrangements for their sister, a homeless drug addict dying of AIDS. At first glance, the two men seem to be polar opposites. But their sister’s tragedy forces them to face family demons and recognize how they are pretty much cut from the same cloth—united forever by a dark, tragic past. The writer Mark Roberts began his career as a stand-up comic and actor. His credits include appearances on Seinfeld, Friends, The Practice, The Larry Sanders Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Now he’s a producer on the CBS televi- sion series Two and a Half Men (cha-ching). He also has written Couples Counseling Killed Katie, Welcome to Tolono, Where the Great Ones Run and Rantoul and Die. Runs through September 18 at the Elephant Space, 6322 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood. TICKETS: 323.960.4410 or elephantstages.com
