LEAP OF FAITH Adapting films to stage musicals seems to be all the “rage”—pun intended! Who could

have predicted that the latest leap would be a world premiere of the musical Leap of Faith? The big-screen adaptation stars four-time Tony Award-nominee, Raúl Esparza who plays the 1992 Steve Martin role with Golden Globe Award-nominee Brooke Shields, who sings and dances her way in to the Debra Winger role. In case you haven’t seen the movie, the story revolves around Jonas, a fraudulent “faith healer” who uses every deceptive trick in the book to con unsuspecting soul-searchers. He and his co-scammers travel across the country to various cities ripping off the innocent. Karma is a bitch, so when one of their trucks breaks down in a small town, Jonas puts his wheels in motion to raise the money needed to fix it and move on. Marva, a waitress in town is a full-on tease and tries to distract him from his “mission.” He best pull it together, ‘cuz the local sheriff ain’t a dummy and he’s determined to expose Jonas as a swindler. Runs September 11 through October 24 at the Ahmanson Theatre, 135 North Grand Avenue, L.A. TICKETS: 213.972.4444 or centertheatregroup.com

BRIEFS: A FESTIVAL OF SHORT PLAYS BRIEFS: A Festival of Short Plays is the official first of an annual event featuring

ten brand new short plays. Selected from over 150 submissions, the ten plays represent playwrights from all across the United States and range from farcical comedies to meaningful dramas and character studies. The plays will also be guided by eight different directors from the Orange County area, each bringing their own unique style to the evening. “We are very excited by the opportunity to showcase this evening of plays dealing with various aspects of LGBT commu- nity. We have plays that deal with the hilarity of what can go wrong or right on a blind date to the touching moments of a first teenage crush. We are certain there will be something for everyone . . . young or old, gay or straight.” states Artistic Director Jack Millis. Runs September 17 through 26 at Theatre Out (The Empire Theatre), 202 N. Broadway in Santa Ana’s Artist Village. TICKETS: 714.826.8700 or theatreout.com

THE CLEAN HOUSE The Clean House is a dramedy that mixes reality and fantasy while the

actors address the audience about imagined situations involving other characters. Dr. Lane, in her early 50s, hires Matilde, a lazy Brazilian, to be her live-in maid. While folding laundry one day, a pair of unrecognizable ladies panties was discovered. Turns out her husband Charles has been having an affair with a 67 year-old breast cancer patient. If that weren’t weird enough, the jilted Lane goes off when she finds out that her neat freak sister, Virginia, has been cleaning her house and covering up for Matilde. Virginia drops the bomb that Charles and old mistress have just arrived; it only gets more outrageous from there! The playwright Sarah Ruhl’s philosophy is that she likes “to see people speaking ordinary words in strange places, or strange people speaking extraordinary words in ordinary places”. Runs through September 19 at the International City Theatre, Long Beach Performing Arts Center, 300 East Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach. TICKETS: 562.4364610 or internationalcitytheatre.org
