WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER BEGINS!
Every now and then, a month like this will fly by—packed to the brim with important events, social changes and
unexpected turns. When it’s over, we’re left exhausted but pleasantly aware that we’re living in an incredible time in history. We can finally see the in the distance the final blows being dealt to the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, as well as to the stagnant remnants of Prop. 8. And even though our work is cut out for us as nonconforming forward thinkers—especially outside our social safety bubble of California—we’d be wrong not to smile and celebrate our smaller, everyday victories. Our humble and hardworking Publisher, Jay Jones, was presented with a Nicky Award for Best Businessman. The staff would like to thank every single voter for this considerate recognition. In the spirit of perpetual change, The Rage Monthly introduces our newest segment: “Rage Recommends.” These pages
in the A-List section are designed to provide you with a concise hot list of media we believe you’d love. From books to DVDs to killer tracks, these collections have found their way into our hearts and heads…and we know you’ll enjoy them too. Crashing in from the imagination of Mel Brooks with laughs, singing and dancing is Young Frankenstein. The raucous revue hits the Orange County Performing Arts Center on September 12, and with it brings the lovely Joanna Glushak who plays Frau Blucher.
PRANCING WITH THE STARS Back to those unexpected turns to which I alluded earlier, two of the famous names on our list of spotlights this month will be appearing on the upcoming season of the iconic Dancing with the Stars. Before you watch them sweat and toil for the perfect score on national TV, you can turn to page 48 and read about some of Michael Bolton’s prior celebrity encounters and newest album available now. His fiery competition on the show, the bold and beautiful Margaret Cho, will not be overshadowed as she plays it back for us and shows off her variety of oral skills on page 36. On a different kind of stage stands the gracious and witty Miss Coco Peru. Filling up the family photo albums with us on page 32, this dashing drag goddess digs up the memories as she prepares for her upcoming performance in Long Beach benefiting LGBT youths. Speaking of youth and vitality, the freshest talent this side of the closet door has hit the scene. Dazzling and delightful, Haviland Stillwell is an openly gay chanteuse and she’s glad to help others find their truth through song on page 52. And finally, we proudly welcome back our Editor-in-Chief, Bill Biss. I never expected to fill anyone’s shoes, but I’ve appreciated the opportunity to take my place at the helm of this incredible publication. Thank you. It’s been my pleasure.
