BEST – Better Environmentally Sound Transportation – The Bicycle Valet Parking project was awarded $5,000 for providing secure bike parking to community events, concerts, festivals and sporting games. Experiencing a high-demand over 2009, the project has been expanded to accommodate over 7,000 bikes parked at 72
events that were attended by 1.5 million people.The Bicycle Valet service enables safe and secure parking, and encourages people who otherwise would not take their bike to do so.
UBC TREK Program Centrewas awarded $5,000 towards the building of the Buchanan Tower Secure Bicycle Storage Project.The UBC TREK Program Centre is dedicated to promoting a more sustainable environment at UBC Vancouver and Metro Vancouver Region.The Buchanan Tower Project will provide a much needed secure parking facility where none currently existed.
Velo Quebecwas awarded a $10,000 grant to assist them with On the move in the community!, Canada’s first active transportation conference. For the 250 participants at the first Canada-wide active transportation conference, held on June 3-4 in Montreal, the term "active transportation" is undoubtedly no longer just a concept but, rather, a reality that is being expressed in various ways throughout Canada and abroad. Forty speakers, panelists and moderators were there to promote the best Quebec, Canadian and international active transportation practices.The participants—stakeholders in the health, education, environmental and transportation sectors—were also able to take advantage of these two discussion days to contribute to the development of Quebec and Canadian active transportation networks as well as the advancement and improvement of initiatives in this field.
