production of the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray. Set in 1962 Balti- more, the story follows several doo wopping high school students and their families. In a nutshell, as the students boogie down (great choreography and fun lyrics) and audition for the Corny Collins dance show, they also manage to combat fear and segregation. When planning for this show, the largest production the REP has ever done,
Director Sam Woodhouse wanted to keep things authentic and cast teens in the teen roles. He invited the San Diego School for Creative and Perform- ing Arts (SCPA) to team-up with the REP. For the first time these bright and talented young people got to experience a professional audition process and rehearse side-by-side with local and Broadway veterans. So, without further ado, The Rage Monthly welcomes, in the lead role of Tracy Turnblad, SCPA graduate and Cal State Fullerton Freshman Bethany Slomka.
The Rage Monthly: Is it fair to say that you are a San Diego native, our very own rising star? Bethany Slomka: Yes. I’ve lived here my whole life. I was singing and dancing
at four and started taking voice lessons and auditioning for plays when I was eight.
Rage: What was your very first stage role? BS: I was a tap-dancing spoon in Beauty and the Beast with Christian Youth Theatre. I was in three numbers.
Rage: How did you end up going to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts? BS: My mom heard about it. My mom’s side of the family is artistic and inter- ested in the arts. I went to private school and then my freshman year I went to
