Commentary

“Jump in, the water’s fine” It seems you can’t please every-

one in this world, and here lately one of those people that couldn’t be pleased was Weaverville ABC Board Chairman Lou Accornero. Mr. Accornero made comments

to the Weaverville Town Council at one of their meetings that he did not care for recent articles in the

Clint Parker

Weaverville Tribune concerning the Weaverville ABC Store and that he didn’t know the Weaverville and Woodfin ABC systems were in a war (a reference to the headline of our first article on the two systems). He also told the board he was con- sidering starting up a publication of his own for the area. It’s funny that he should com-

plain to the Weaverville board, they have nothing to do with this paper. Anyway, he never called me or

the managing editor, Matt Tate, to complain before going to the board. No, instead he decides to let peo- ple who can do absolutely nothing about our reporting before letting people who can do something. In- teresting. Wonder why? Wonder why he was upset at

our reporting? Was it because this newspaper questions the ABC Board’s first quarter financial re- ports? I mean are we just to take the numbers they gave the board even if they don’t match the num- bers on the State ABC Commission website? All we did was point out that the

first quarter profit of about $35,000 (which was what was reported to the council) was really only less than $12,000. Is that a bad thing? Was it because of a request for addi- tional financial information in the

called to let me know that the bal- ance sheet would be forthcoming as soon as they could finalize it. I figured with the latest finan-

cial computer programs that it was a matter of hitting some keys on a keyboard and printing it out, but I guess not. Anyway we’re still wait- ing on the balance sheet. Just before getting off the phone

we with me, Accornero said every- thing was fine. I wasn’t sure what to make of the comment, but I thought it was just a general statement that everything was good between the newspaper and Accornero. However, I learn that just hours

after our conversation he was down at the Weaverville Business Asso- ciation meeting trying to drum up support for a new publication. Well, I have said this to everyone

that’s ever told me they were hav- ing thoughts about going into the publishing business, “Jump in the water’s fine!” A new newspaper will give people

a choice in publications. Tere will be the independently run news- paper that goes after news stories wherever they may find them and the quasi government approved newspaper. I know which one will be asking the hard questions about what’s going on in government. Question is will you?
