NBHS Chamber choir nabs first place
By Matt Tate Melissa Reavis was in New
York City for the second time with the North Bun- combe High School Cham- ber Choir performing in the Heritage Festival. She felt some of the rook-
ies’ nerves during the choir’s performance at Riverside Church, a massive cathedral that takes up two city blocks near the city’s Upper West Side. So, as a senior, she gave
them some practical advice. “I just told them to sing
like we normally do,” she said. It just so happens, though,
a normal singing perfor- mance from this choir is award-worthy. Te NBHS crew took
home trophies and plaques for a gold-rated performance and a first place for scoring an average of 90 or higher; the Adjucator’s Award for scoring an average of 95 or higher; and best choral group
North Buncombe Hero
for scoring first place out of 18 choirs during the Heri- tage Festival this month. In addition to their vic-
tory, the girls took in the sights, which junior Jessica Montgomery said were more impressive than she imag- ined. But, perhaps the highlight
of the trip was a special per- formance for hospice patients in the Bronx. Te choir did a high-step-
ping rendition of “New York, New York” that wowed the crowd. Senior Rachel Beebe said,
“Te staff there told us it was one of the largest responses they had heard in a long time.” Te rest of the choir in-
cluded Jess Bates, Nicolle Bremner, Moriah Burchfield, Megan Cox, Estefania DeAl- ba, Kaley Hembree, Caitlin Kelley, Laura Linsley, Am- ber Mabry, Kelsey Moore, Kate Sorrells, Abby Sprouse, Brooke Sutton, Emily Trues- dell, Jennifer Ward and Eryn Willis.
