Simple Ways to Feed Your Soul by Nancy Pabers
oday, food is a hot topic in con- versations that occur far beyond the table. While most dialogues include the foods we eat, few address “soul” food. Although it’s true that some meals can make us feel as though we have died and gone to Heaven, our soul needs nourishment, too. These seven suggestions are simple, natural ways to feed your soul.
T QUICK GREEN TIP:
White vinegar is a terrific cleaner, especially for soap scum and mildew.
Get Curious Curiosity, which allows for possibility, is a tasty deliciousness that expands per- spective and enlivens imagination, while taking the soul from a place of survival to one of vibrant, passionate exploration. The next time you feel stuck—whether working through a relationship issue or starting a business—get curious, which according to Irish poet and storyteller James Stephens, “will conquer fear even more than bravery will.”

Seek True Pleasure Pleasure and pain are key motivators, and while it’s human nature to gravitate toward pleasure to avoid pain, it isn’t healthy to indulge in a form of false pleasure that does not nourish the soul. Rationalizing why others are more blessed and minimizing their good fortune in order to soothe our own sense of lack depletes us instead. True pleasure is a daily feast for the soul.
Be Grateful
According to author and poet William Arthur Ward, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” The soul expands and grows stronger with every acknowl- edgement of gratitude. Starting the day with an expression of thankfulness gives us great energy to take into our day.
Be Willing to Forgive Forgiveness is the gift we ultimately give to ourselves. The past is released and the present moment is freed and able to be recognized. We have all had

the amazing experience of truly forgiv- ing someone—but what happens when we want to forgive, yet cannot? One simple technique is to say, “I am willing to forgive.” This willingness allows for- giveness to reach the soul, beyond the mind’s judgment. As the mind releases its hold and the soul fills with grace, fear of hurt dissipates, and forgiveness is complete. Forgiveness feeds the soul.
Choose Amusement While everywhere we look today there is an invitation to become overly com- mitted to the seriousness of a situation or event, remember that even in the bleakest times, it is necessary to find some relief and amusement. An amuse- ment snack several times a day raises the soul’s vibration.
Affirm Your Life Are you aware of your thoughts, or are they on autopilot, sabotaging the person you desire to be? According to author Louise Hay’s Heal Your Life phi- losophy, “These are only thoughts, and the thoughts can be changed.” Create encouraging, present-tense statements to affirm the life you are creating, and feed your soul daily with plenty of posi- tive affirmations—they are calorie-free.
Quiet Your Mind Daily meditation, prayer, guided visual- ization or any other activity where you can quiet your mind provides an oppor- tunity for the soul to communicate with you. In moments of quiet, we become present to “what is,” at a soul level. Mor- sels of wisdom, joy and a sense of peace are a few rewards for such a practice. As with any exercise, begin gently and allow the effects to build over time.
