own childhood, when I was always outdoors, weather permitting. Today, our children’s free time is a scarce commodity. I recall toting my girls from one event to the next, feeling like a worn-out taxicab; imagine how they felt. Today, fueled by junk food and fast food to meet busy schedules, most children spend their “downtime” watching TV and being stimulated by the Internet. Let’s shift their paradigm to one that includes consuming natural foods and enjoying more outdoor activities.

O

San Diego’s “best weather in the U.S.” gives our kids plenty of time to be outside soaking up fresh air and sunshine, and this magazine offers them lots of healthy outlets for active fun. Marie, co-founder of Family Kayak, offers fam- ily kayak tours. Peggy, with Aqua-Adventures, promotes beach activities. Amy and Jason, of Stand Up Paddle Boarding, invite children and families to Carlsbad Lagoon. Spramani, at Nature of Art, teaches children to be creative, using nontoxic paint and crayons. Her booth at local events is always filled with happy kids. Explore your children’s alternative school options in our Community Spotlight

on the Waldorf School, and visit the Oasis Organic School’s site at OasisSchool. org. (Check the News Brief about plans for a Sudbury School, too.)Learn about Chickpeas’ healthy lunch program for kids, and find sustainable, zero-trash lunch ideas at Green to Go. Tigertails even talks about what’s in healthy lunches for pets. I am grateful to my oldest daughter, Lindsey, and my youngest, Kathryn, for

the joy, growth opportunities and eye-opening lessons I’ve received as their mom. My youngest just graduated from high school and, with the help of my editors, turned her school project into “Healthier School Lunches,” in this issue. Being im- mersed in Natural Awakenings by osmosis, Kathryn has transformed into a healthy- eating, health-conscious individual. A favorite author, Wayne Dyer, believes that our children see what we’re all

about by what we live, rather than what we say. I agree: What we do as parents speaks louder than anything we can ever say. I never intimidated Kathryn about her grades. She earned all A’s last semester and scored her first dream job, working with pets. The lesson: Model your best, and make sure you are worthy of imitation. As parents, we need to let go and let our kids make their own mistakes and

choices. We set the stage at home and school, and they act with the props we give them. Our homes, hearts and school choices build the foundation of our children’s future. The next time you ask, “Where did my kid get that from?” look inside your own home and life for the answer. I also believe in the “oxygen theory.” We parents must place the oxygen mask

on ourselves before helping our children. This includes vital “me time.” I recently visited Two Bunch Palms in Desert Springs for an affordable, adults-only getaway, and my family and those I work with felt my rejuvenation. But don’t take my word for it; try it yourself.
