of a bloated State bureau- cracy and services. Given the political fall-
out, a respected French commentator told me that despite the initial optimism concerning his presidency in 2007, Ni- colas
Sarkozy “has not main- tained the gravitas of be- ing president.” With the next election
in 2012, there’s possibly sufficient time for damage control with an impend- ing cabinet reshuffle, but the undertow of political scandal can nonetheless paralyze the government from taking the decisive actions so necessary for socio/economic stability and prosperity.

groaned under its weight of delicacies such as it seldom bore. At one end snapped and bristled the barbecue, which was done to perfection, while roast- ed chickens and turkeys, boiled hams and tongues, were paraded at the other, flanked by pasts°y of vari- ous kinds and immense plum puddings, with duck, custards, and fish caught from the water within an hour or two, lobsters, jel- lies and preserved fruits of several kinds. All but sugar, wines and spirits of which there were enough to have furnished twenty ordinary dinners, were the produce of the island. “But the center of the

to go there”. I personally, couldn’t wait to get my license plates with “Live Free or Die” on them for all the world to see. New Hampshire doesn’t
need to be boxed in with a made-up product. It does have a product along with its beauty and that’s the hospitality of the people. That makes the visitor become a nicer person so they won’t embarrass themselves. It has already taken off my NY edge. Seriously, no other state
is known like we are BE- CAUSE of our slogan. Let other states have a prod- uct. We have a way of life. Is there any possibility we can get OTT to change their minds? How about putting on the ballot in November for the people to decide or am I just whistling Dixie? Thanks for listening to me. I’m with you on this one.

table exhibited the grand- est beauty of all. It was a silver tube tub that would hold four gallons full of pancakes (flapjacks) rising from its rich and polished sides like an immense snow drift, for it was cov- ered from the base to the attic with powered white sugar. A floating island, representing a ship was stationed a little below. A large bowl of punch was handed round and the ladies as well as the gen- tlemen did justice to the
wine and cordials which were presented in flowing goblets. “They sat two hours at
the table when chocolate and tea were announced upon the green before the door. After these refresh- ments many of the gentle- men smoked, and, late in the afternoon, with an abundance of ceremony, bows and courtesies, the company bade us adieu, and Cutts Island settled once more into its accus- tomed pastoral quiet. And to think I’ve lived nearly sixty years since that time; why, it seems as if it was but yesterday that I lis- tened to the grave, formal compliments of Governor Wentworth and blushed when Mr. Pepperell said he guessed that young Mr. Gerrish had an eye to the Cutts property. Well, they have all been dead these many years, governors and councilors and baronets and their stately dames, and I alone am left to tell the story of that old time. “Sic transit gloria mundi,” as our good old Parson Adams used to say.
