Hungry for Summer: A Unique Collection of Recipes from Island Residents of Winnipesaukee
by Jeannette Buell and Daryl Thompson
Reviewed by Judy Normandin Hungry for Summer
presents over 250 recipes, all wonderfully fit for New Hampshire in the sum- mertime. From cocktails and appetizers to breakfast breads, poultry, hearty meats, desserts and a spe- cial section on cooking with fire, the recipes are appealing for large fam- ily gatherings and enter- taining summer visitors yet practical in terms of ingredients, advice and suggested improvisations. The authors have contrib- uted their own recipes, collected the rest from residents of the islands of Winnipesaukee, and have coordinated the testing of all the recipes. This book captures the
flavor of summer on lakes with classics like Blue- berry Pancakes and Blue- berry Pie (two of 18 recipes that include blueberries), S’mores, Dough Boys, and Easy Barbecued Chick- en. It also features many unique offerings such as Welch Island Fish and Veggie Fry, Clam Chowder for Fifty (winter) Trekkers, Uncle Bill’s Cucumber Salad, Sun Fish Catching Dough Balls, and Emer- gency Breakfast to name just a few! The Cooking with Fire section includes step by step instructions for Bean Hole Beans and how to build a lobster pit. Then, there’s Husband Stealing Huckleberry Pie, another example of unique! Of course, the largest sec-
our most popular dishes reflect influences from be- yond our borders. The best cookbooks are
those that make you want to read them for the extras, not just for the recipes. Well, authors Jeannette Buell and Daryl Thompson did a wonderful job of splic- ing advice, anecdotes and reminiscences throughout the book. The result is lots of smiles and some insight
into the special lifestyle and family history on the islands of Winnipesaukee. Over and over, we hear of families returning to the same island, same cottage year after year. This is a familiar theme through- out the region. Our best traditions center around food, family, friends and summer, and Hungry for Summer makes us appre- ciate it all!
