OUR STORY

The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.

One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.

Kimball Favors School Choice

To The Editor: Jack Kimball, a suc-

cessful business man from Dover, is running for Governor of New Hamp- shire. Jack favors school choice. He believes par- ents rather than the gov- ernment should be able to choose the best education path for their children. Some children thrive in a home school environ- ment, others do better within the discipline of a private school, while oth- ers are not challenged by our public school system. Kimball was impressed

by the results of the change that took place in New Zealand about a de- cade ago when that coun- try gave parents school choice. A new minister of educa-

tion in New Zealand was disturbed to find that high school students in New Zealand had test scores about 15% below those of their peer countries, which included Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thai- land and Australia.

AUTHORIZED DEALER

New Zealand installed

a program whereby the total tax dollars assigned to education would fol- low the parents and they could choose any school they thought best for their child including home schooling. As could be expected there was substantial opposition from the teachers union and school administra- tors. At that time 85% of the students were edu- cated in the public school system and about 15% were in private schools or were home schooled. This change of education funding, putting parents in charge did not destroy the public school system as some argued, but it made it much better. The competition provid-

ed by giving parents the ability to choose a school that had the better teach- ers, better administra- tors and better learning environment resulted in a substantial improvement of test scores, parent and student satisfaction. After 5 years test results showed that New Zealand students had scores 15%

communities along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and another 15,000 to neighboring cities and towns. An independent circulation audit estimates that over 60,000 people read the Weirs Times every week.

higher than their peer countries. Jack Kimball believes

parent management of their children’s educa- tion produces better re- sults than government management of educa- tion and is the freedom that parents deserve. He intends to make School Choice with vouchers for private school and home schooling a major part of his platform. Not only would a voucher program provide better results for parents and students but with a voucher of less than half of what is presently spent per student there would also be a spending savings for communities and the state. I am pleased to endorse

Jack Kimball for Governor of New Hampshire.

Not a Product, A Way of Life

To Editor Brendan Smith: Your readers need your wisdom. Why do we need to play by the rules that OTT has set down? Do you have a reporter who can find out what indi- vidual came up with the idea of a product? Is it

perhaps a young person who is not worldly wise? Are there wiser heads who we might prevail upon? If enough people in New Hampshire believe that “Live Free Or Die” says it all, why can’t we prevail instead? But we need a contact to make that dif- ference. I became a citizen of

New Hampshire 5 months ago. To move here we got rid of 8 rooms of furniture as we wanted a new start in every way. We posted everything on Craig’s list. We lived close to NY City. We had a real diversity of people trudging to our home to carry away our furniture and memories. They came from all the 5 boroughs of New York, people originally from India, South America, a Muslim couple, 2 tall black girls from Harlem who carried out furniture I didn’t think a man could carry. They had just come back from New Hamp- shire with their basketball team. Every single person that asked where we were going and we replied “New Hampshire,” their face lit up and they said, “ah, the Live Free Or Die State, I love it there” but mostly it was “I’ve always wanted
