THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 22, 2010 JAZZ from 3

I thought it would be a great attraction.” Steve even did a solo audition for Bob and his daughter Sandra, who is assistant to the General Manager. They definitely liked

what they heard and gave Steve the go-ahead. A new stage was con- structed in the Tavern to accommodate the band and “The Steve Colby Quartet” took to the stage on the Fourth of July and have been building a crowd of loyal lovers of jazz ever since as well as con- verting a few others who were never really familiar with this great American music tradition. “It’s a global language,”

says Steve. “Everyone un- derstands jazz.” Joining Steve in the

quartet the f irst few weeks are keyboardist Ben O’Brien, who was a classmate of Steve’s at Laconia High. Ben also play with the rock group “Glenridge” who will be on stage at “Soulfest” which takes place at Gunstock recreation Area on August 5-7th. Zach Smith is the bass-

ist. Zach is from North Carolina and is in the area for the summer and met Steve in the orchestras of the Meredith Summer Theatre, where they both head off to after their Sun- day afternoon of Jazz. David Leblanc, another

local musician, takes care of percussion. School and other com-

mitments will see changes in the quartet over the weeks with Steve as the constant. The Steve Colby quarter

will be serving up mostly straight jazz, the stan-

the band for a kind of jazz “open mic” hour in the future. It almost seems as if the

D.A. Long Tavern at Fun- spot was built for jazz. It’s warm, friendly ambience and casual seating sets the relaxing tone that is the perfect feel for settling in and listening to some great jazz. It offers full bar service so one can enjoy any variety of adult bever- ages to help you sit back and relax and get “into the groove.” There may not be the

expansive dance floor that encompassed the legend- ary Irwin’s Winnipesau- kee Gardens during its heyday, but the sounds of

you can see why for your- self every Sunday after- noon. Funspot Family Enter-

It is located on Rte 3 in the Weirs between Mer- edith and Weirs Beach. You can find out more by going to www.funspot. nh.com or by calling 603- 366-4377.

dards that you might be most familiar with. Songs like “Stardust”, “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “The Way You Look Tonight” might be heard as well as any of a large selection of classic jazz tunes. Fu- ture Sundays might see the performance of some original tunes as well. Ben has been known to pen an original jazz tune of his own. “It’s really all about in- teractions between musi- cians. It’s really energy instead of melody,” says

Steve enthusiastically in discussing his love of jazz. The Steve Colby Quartet

will be playing at the D.A. Long Tavern every Sunday from 1 to 3pm. “3 o’clock is just the set

time now,” says Steve. “Af- ter that we might find our- selves getting into some jam sessions. We’ll be playing it by ear and going with the crowd.” Steve is also hoping to

entice other local musi- cians, of all ages, to bring their instruments and join
