SUNDAY AFTERNOON JAZZ TAKES CENTER STAGE AT FUNSPOT
by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor
The days of live jazz at
Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens in the Weirs have come and gone but the feel of those days can be found on Sunday af- ternoons at the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in the Weirs. “I want to keep jazz
alive,” says Steve Colby, the leader of the apt- ly named “Steve Colby Quartet” which takes to the stage every Sunday at 1pm in the D.A. Long Tavern at the Rte 3 loca- tion.
“Jazz is truly an Ameri-
can art form,” says Steve. “It’s an original American art form and it needs to be emphasized.” Steve, who plays the
wind and reed instru- ments ( think Benny Goodman), is a Laconia High School graduate. When not studying music he works at Funspot as a floor attendant. He ap- proached Funspot owner and manager Bob Lawton and asked if he might be able to utilize the D.A. Long Tavern so he and

his band mates could have a place to practice their jazz in front of an audience on a regular basis. There didn’t seem to be any other venues in the area who wanted a jazz group. “I was very interested,”
said Lawton. “I’m a big fan of jazz. I can remem- ber the nights at Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens when the greats like Lio- nel Hampton and Cab Calloway would play. You don’t hear much jazz in the area anymore and See JAZZ on 37
