pitchcare.comTraining NEW COURSES FOR 2010
A look at some of the training courses on offer from Pitchcare over the coming months
Fully accredited and tailored training courses from Pitchcare T
he winter training season is now well underway and I’m pleased to say that demand for turf and land based training courses has remained steady.
It seems to be the case that despite,
or perhaps because of, current economic restraints, employers are keen to retain responsible and committed staff and to maximise efficiency and productivity by ensuring people are well trained and informed. Health and Safety legislation, together with increasing demand from insurers for evidence that employees are fully aware of safe practice procedures when using machinery and equipment, are also keeping demand buoyant. Similarly, self employed arboriculturalists, landscapers, grounds maintenance and turfcare professionals are regularly being asked for independent endorsement of their skills and expertise. Indeed, such evidence is vital if they are to win tenders and contracts in an increasingly competitive market. At Pitchcare we continue to work closely with our network of Training Partners to place individuals on the recognised pesticides, machinery and equipment courses in most areas of the UK and our reputation is steadily growing as the first port of call for those seeking high quality service and support.
Over the past few months we have been developing the Pitchcare suite of one day General Sports Turf Maintenance courses designed especially for part time grounds staff and volunteers, typically looking after their local amateur or community sports facilities. These courses are theory based and cover the Winter Sports, Cricket, Bowls and Artificial Surfaces and have been accredited by Lantra Awards as Customised Awards. They are also ideal for anyone entering the turf care profession as they give an overview of all the machinery and equipment used, with an emphasis on Health and Safety. Candidates each receive a Lantra Awards Certificate.
In addition to the practical courses,
we are now offering three new courses: Health and Safety - All Machinery Developed in response to demands

from club and stadium Health and Safety Officers, this course includes elements such as record keeping, risk assessment, emergency procedures, PPE, COSHH, safe driving, and routine maintenance and post maintenance and cleaning. It can be tailor-made to individual organisations and delegates receive a Pitchcare certificate of attendance endorsed by an approved instructor.
Dealing with Difficult People and Situations
Led by Frank Newberry, again accredited by Lantra Awards. This course will be of value to anyone whose working environment brings them into
the lawn and includes a section on organic practices and a month-by- month working diary.
We will be rolling out a full programme of the Pitchcare courses during 2010; details of dates and locations will be published on our website,
www.pitchcare.com, and in the regular monthly training newsletters that are sent to all our members.

contact with the general public, eg school sportsfields, local authority amenity land, village or community sports facilities and play areas, public parks and gardens, theme and leisure parks.
Inevitably such people will meet situations of potential conflict and misunderstanding, events which demand well-developed communication skills if they are to be dealt with sensitively, with the best possible outcome being achieved for all concerned.
Lawn Care for the 21st Century
A one day course designed by Phil Sharples, author of The Lawn Book (available through the Pitchcare on-line shop). This course has been developed primarily for the keen amateur gardener who wishes to produce and maintain a domestic lawn, but it would be equally beneficial for anyone looking to produce a professional lawn for themselves or their clients. The course deals with establishing and maintaining
We would welcome enquiries from anyone interested in delivering the General Sports Turf Maintenance courses mentioned above. You will need to be an experienced grounds person, ideally with an instructing qualification or evidence of having delivered relevant training. A current Emergency First Aid qualification is also required but we can arrange this for you if necessary. We will also arrange for your registration with Lantra Awards as an instructor for the Pitchcare courses. Simply e-mail me with your contact details, your cv and details of your instructing experience.
Course Venues
Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for our members to access training, so we are looking for venues throughout the UK. In most cases all that is required is a suitable meeting room for up to, say, 20 delegates with facilities to offer basic catering. For the turf
maintenance courses it would be an advantage if a range of
machinery and
equipment was available for demonstration purposes. If you think you can help, please e-mail your club details to me at
