AN explosion caused by a grenade left a huge crater in a green at Burnley Golf Club.
Police said the grenade was issued to the British Army, and believe it could have been taken by a soldier who brought it home on leave.
Officers were called to the scene by the club when they discovered the giant hole on the sixth green.
The explosion caused around £800 worth of damage on the highest point of the course.
IT appears that BIGGA’s website optimisation was hijacked - by none other than Viagra.
When putting the website address for Harrogate Week into the Google search engine, the first result showed an online drug store offering complete anonimity, fast delivery and 24 hour support
A load of ... EXPLOSION-proof dog bins
(probably the last thing you would need after swallowing your purchase!).
Maybe it was simply an extra service being offered by Mr. Pemberton and Co. or perhaps BIGGA were just preparing themselves for some ‘stiff’ challenges in the coming year!
The crater was discovered by groundsman Andrew Samuels, who said: “I came up onto the green and it was covered in debris. At first I thought it was a firework, but it’s frightening to think it was a grenade.”
We had a competition on the same day and it took me and my colleague an extra two hours to make the green playable. And then there's the
repair work as well.”
Whilst this is an extremely serious incident you have to marvel at the sense of humour of the public who, when the news item appeared on The Burnley Citizen’s website, came up with the following comments:
“Now that’s what you call a real hole in one”
“4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire - and a big one in Burnley”
And my favourite: “There’s a large hole and police are looking into it”.

As well as creating a steaming mess for the groundsmen to clean up, the explosions have also forced Windlesham Parish Council to remove all its bins.
Tim Price, the parish clerk, said, “When you have to take apart the damaged bins, which are full of dog mess, after a firework has gone off in it, it’s not the nicest job in the world.”

A BRITISH team will attempt to smash the world land- speed record for a lawn mower when they set out across the billiard smooth surface of Pendine Sands, South Wales on 27th and 28th February.

Earth Anchors, the company that manufacture the bins, which cost around £200 each, has come up with a new design, with a mesh bottom, to make the dog bins blast resistant.
Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, will attempt to break the previous lawn mower land-speed record of 80mph set by Bob Cleveland on the Bonneville Salt Flats in July 2006.
The team hope to smash the existing mower record by more than a quarter and top over 100mph.
To qualify for the record, the Countax machine must be capable of cutting grass in the morning of the event. The blade will be removed and
the machine will be timed as it travels one mile of the seven mile long sands. It must then make a return run within one hour - the average of the two runs will determine the final time.
A spokesman for the project said “be under no illusions, this is no collection of blokes standing around in a shed wondering what to do until the pub opens.”
