Agripower have turned a former landfill site in West Sussex into a superior sports pitch in just under six weeks, but it could not have been achieved without excellent suppliers

AGRIPOWER Sportsturf Ltd. were selected to carry out the remediation and construction of a winter sports pitch at Florence Road, Chichester, West Sussex. The site had been previously used for landfilling between the 1930s and 1950s and, later, between 1995 and 2004 had been subject to various investigations to assess potential soil and gas contamination.
Chichester District Council’s (CDC) intention was to upgrade the land by constructing a winter sports pitch, in conjunction with appropriate site drainage, engineered stabilisation and fill capping/encapsulation measures. Working in conjunction with Bureau
Veritas Consulting, Agripower modified the specification to be more sports friendly. The site was extremely sensitive to any environmental impact caused by the construction. The work commenced in early July 2006 with the removal of the existing turf; a continual application of water was required to suppress dust. The site was then intensively rolled using heavy compaction equipment. Localised depressions of up to 600mm were encountered and the site was reduced generally by 150mm. Following the rolling, Agripower’s laser controlled

dozer re-graded the whole site to ±15mm and then the site was proof rolled to ensure an even compaction. A 100mm layer of Type 1 roadstone was then laid and compacted, followed by a Geogrid and a further 150mm of roadstone. The stone foundation was then covered with a 75mm grit sand layer to act as a lateral drainage layer, aiding any ground water to dissipate over the stone. Locally sourced natural topsoil was then placed over the sand layer to a finished depth of 250mm and again graded with laser controlled graders. A 50mm layer of medium fine sand was then ameliorated into the top to produce a free draining growing medium.
“Having the correct equipment on site was essential” said Graham Longdin, Director of Agripower Sportsturf. “In excess of 1500 tons of materials per day was delivered, levelled and rolled to very fine tolerances. This, coupled with excellent suppliers Hanson and Tarmac Topsport, helped us import over 11,500 tons and carry out over 18 separate operations and still finish the contract in under 6 weeks.”
