Time to get the deckchair out and enjoy the lovely Jersey weather!

completed, the rootzone was added in bays. The rootzone had been mixed with two parts sand to one part sandy loam soil. Once the importation of the rootzone was completed, a final layer of screened topdressing was used to make good final levels. At this time an irrigation company, who had been developing an under soil watering system, approached the States of Jersey to see if they could use the green as a trial for their project. The company, who I will not name for reasons you will see later, mole ploughed in leaky pipe at 18 inch centres and connected the system up to the on-site borehole water supply. Surface levels were completed and the green sown with the then standard 80 : 20 mix. At first all seemed well - a bowling green being watered at the same time as bowling taking place. Time to get the deckchair out and enjoy the lovely Jersey weather. Until one morning when I went out to brush the green to find mounds of raised grass - the green had been transformed into 5 mini crown greens over night! The company who installed the system did not get the filtration on the system right. This caused blockages and a build up of water which created perfect small

mounds. Once the system had been turned off the mounds returned to normal. The system was never used again and is still under the surface! A conventional pop-up system was installed a year later and the bowling green was officially open in August 1988. In 1994 an artificial surface with floodlights was constructed on two of the winter games pitches. This has been an asset to the site with back to back games of hockey at weekends, training and five- a-side football in the evenings. An extension to the indoor complex was made recently, adding a 25 metre swimming pool, small training pool, plus gym and restaurant area.

Since 1988 the playing fields have moved with the times to provide new facilities to encourage the development of sports on the island. Softball is now played on two diamonds. One of these has a laid in mound, bases and full safety cage. The other is a grass diamond. Both are used all day on Sundays throughout the summer for league matches. Recently a number of teams have visited to take part in tournaments, including the GB team. Petanque is another sport which is

played throughout the year on purpose built terrains. The club arranges a spring tournament which, again, encourages visitors to the island. Next to Les Quennevais Sports Complex is the La Moye Golf Club, the home of the Jersey Open each year. When this takes place a section of the field is closed off for use as the practice range.

Les Quennevais has also been the venue for the European Tug of War Championships. Not surprisingly, there was a huge amount of renovation work required after this event! On one of the old hockey pitches, which did not get used when the artificial was installed, four croquet lawns have been constructed. The lawns were laid by the groundstaff over two winters. Each lawn is on a different level to add character to the area. These have been used for the European Championships on a number of occasions. The States are currently bidding to hold the World Croquet Championships in 2009. Over the years Les Quennevais Sports complex has developed into a fine jewel in the crown of Jersey’s excellent sporting facilities.
