THE long, dry summer may be behind us. However, the need to use water wisely on the golf course has never been such a hot topic and many golf clubs will now be looking closely at the ability of their irrigation to water efficiently next season. Here we look at how the installation of a Toro irrigation system is helping a club in Middlesex control its watering more effectively - and achieve the best-looking course it has ever had. The drought conditions

experienced in the South East this summer made more and more golf courses think seriously about controlling irrigation to improve efficiency, and so conserve water. The great thing about controlled irrigation is that it

CONTROL ... the weather!

The drought conditions experienced in the South East prompted Wyke Green Golf Club to improve the efficiency of their irrigation system

enables course managers to choose precisely when, where and how much water they put on the course, which as well as saving water ensures the turf gets exactly what it needs to look its best. With this aim in mind,

Toro irrigation contractor Topturf, from West Sussex, completed a design and build project this year at Wyke Green Golf Club, just 30 minutes from the centre of London, in Isleworth, Middlesex. The private members club boasts a beautiful 18-hole parkland course and is keen to maintain the best possible golfing experience for its players. Topturf sales director Andy Burbridge takes up the story: “We have had a good

relationship with Wyke Green for many years, maintaining their existing irrigation system. Last year they asked us to design a completely new greens, tees, approaches and fairways system. Together we decided on the key aims of the project - to provide more control of their irrigation generally, as well as flexibility, built-in serviceability and the capability to carry out more precise watering.” Topturf uses technically- advanced design methods to put together its irrigation system recommendations, and the new design was presented to Wyke Green overlaid on an aerial plan, enabling them to see clearly the areas covered and how it would work in practice. “We believe in

standardisation of systems and components where we can, and in having as few components as possible,” Andy says. “So we selected just three types of sprinklers - 835S Series for fairways, approaches and greens, and 725Gs and 810Gs for tees. All run by a Toro’s Trident PC- based controller. “The benefit of using the 800 Series sprinklers is that they have a full, and part- circle capability, so if the course is going through a water shortage the sprinklers can be adjusted to part-circle mode to save water. “We also put in a variable- speed pumping plant, which means the speed of the pump adjusts according to the demand for water. This will result in a substantial
