The not so serious side of the industry You CANNOT be serious!

Monty’s gamble on the 19th at Rowallan

THE first golf course in the UK to be designed by Colin Montgomerie will break with tradition by having a ‘playable’ 19th hole. The Rowallan Castle Golf Club course, in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, 30 miles south of Glasgow, will officially be opened by Monty in 2007, and the 19th will be a genuine par-three championship hole. A new era?

There was a good article on the IOG website recently called ‘A New Era for Groundsmanship’. It looked at the role of a modern day groundsman through the eyes of one of the industry’s most respected groundsmen, Alan Ferguson of Ipswich Town FC.

Alan quotes the advance of technology as being a major change in recent years, and I quote; “Maintaining playing surfaces in pristine condition is now very much a science as much as it is an art; the

industry is so technically advanced, and not enough people outside of the industry know and appreciate that.” Thankfully, he says, the team at Ipswich FC is excluded from

his remarks, “but, clearly, a lot needs to be done to communicate industry messages about the rewards, technology development and high levels of job satisfaction attainable as a professional groundsman. Industry-related websites have been superb at exposing our industry to a wider audience via the Internet and one in particular has to be applauded for many of its initiatives”.

Could this be veiled praise without mentioning the P word? I guess they can’t be talking about anyone else really. Anyway, I’m looking forward to catching up with you all at a large industry show at a racecourse somewhere in the south of England in early September.

work being carried out at Celtic Manor for the Ryder Cup in 2010, have dubbed it “the money hole”, as it is likely to settle wagers.

The idea behind the additional hole is that it will be used by players

who complete 18 holes and find their match is tied. Normally, golfers would

play the 1st or 18th again until the result was decided. Rowallan is a £55m project which is expected to see the

first members tee off next summer.

Colin Montgomerie said,

“We just thought why not? The 19th is the stuff of golfing legend and it was time to make it a reality.” ‘Having a few bevvies’ on the 20th doesn’t quite have the same ring to it but, who knows, it might be an idea that catches on at other courses.

Tattoo you

I don’t really understand the modern penchant for tattoos. Discreet ones perhaps, in interesting little places, might bring a smile to the face! Like this one, which is just ‘so’ cute!

... and the photo below? Nothing to with turfcare whatsoever, but what a great idea for the Men’s Room
