temperatures - the ideal growing conditions for turf.

CANNONS Turf sell a range of six turf types but will also grow to order. Most of the fields at the farm are about 10 hectares in size and bounded by hedges. Tim and his production manager carefully select which field is to be used, taking into account soil type and topography. Field preparation begins with the spraying off of all remaining vegetation. Depending on the time of the year, this may require three applications before the vegetation is eradicated. Fine leafed fescues are particularly difficult to treat due to their waxy leaves, which repel the

active ingredient in the herbicide. All mown clippings are composted and returned into the field during ploughing operations. A plough and press is used to cultivate the field, followed by a stone burier. The whole area is then levelled. The field will be monitored to ascertain which weed seeds germinate and a further cultivation will be carried out to eradicate these weeds. The fields are sown, using Cannons own designed 12-metre seeder, making three passes to deliver an even coverage of seed. The machine is capable of seeding 26 hectares a day. A single field will often have two different seed mixtures growing at the

same time. A rye dominant grass will be sown around the edge of the field (margin crop), with the more valuable crop (a fine turf mix) being sown within this margin crop. This acts as protection of the more valuable crop, especially when machinery turns at the end of its run.

The seed germinates after several days and a flat roll is used to settle the sward. Cylinder mowers are usually used for the

Raising the bar…

Trimax lifted the bar 12 years ago with the original Stealth, setting a new standard in rotary wing mowers. Trimax are raising it again with the release of Stealth Series 2.

In keeping with the company’s policy of continuous improvement the new StealthS2 now features full width striping, infinitely variable height adjustment and downward wing float. Not to mention Trimax’s new LazerBladez™

cutting system.
