outcome is devastating as that moment becomes frozen in time to the point that remembering the event may bring back the smells, sounds, feelings and images as if it was happening the first time. Ac- cording to EMDRIA (the certifying body for EMDR therapists), EMDR appears to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. After EMDR therapy, the person finds that they no longer are reliving the traumatic experi- ence, nor do they have intense emotions attached to the memory of the event. What Kind of Problems Can EMDR Treat? Research has proven that EMDR
is a highly effective method of psycho- therapy used for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR was reported successful when treating other conditions such as pain disorders, panic attacks, complicated grief, disso- ciative disorders, depression, disturbing memories, phobias, addictions, perfor- mance anxiety, stress reduction, sexual and/or physical abuse, body dysmorphic disorders and eating disorders. I be- lieve (this is my opinion, I do not have empirical data to prove it) that the reason EMDR works for many of these condi- tions is because if you peel the onion far
down enough, you will find that there was a traumatic event that triggered the condition. In other words, if someone is suffering from panic attacks for example, I would develop a timeline of events that happened to try to determine whether the person was traumatized and is still in the freeze mode. Often times, there is quite a bit of unresolved or unacknowl- edged trauma. This would be a perfect scenario to begin EMDR therapy. How Do I Know if EMDR is Right
for Me? You are a unique individual with unique needs, therefore your treatment plan should be custom designed for you. A trained EMDR therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation and consider a number of factors when deciding whether EMDR therapy is right for you. How Do I Find a Trained EMDR
Therapist? Most therapists that are trained in EMDR will list it as part of their credentials on their business cards, websites or promotional materials. Go to
www.EMDRIA.org (only EMDR thera- pists that are members of EMDRIA are listed). Ask your friends and family for a recommendation. EMDR therapy has become quite popular in the past decade and more and more people know how effective it is and probably know of a qualified EMDR therapist. Last but not least, ask your therapist if she or he is EMDR trained. Often times we forget to inform our clients/patients of all of the things we are trained in (this happened to one of my colleagues).
